The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

But right at landfall, it weakened CAT3, & made a right bypass around the city. It then resumed it's northward path.

The consequences of that "right bypass" are what New Orleans is dealing with right now. From a storm surge standpoint, it was a worst case -- since the change in direction thrust all that water up an unobstructed path from Lake Borgne into Lake Ponchartrain.

Thus, was New Orleans flooded through the back door...

I just saw the man whose wife was apparently washed away in CNN, and this is the first time during this whole thing I've felt like I'm going to lose it.

Don't forget Alberta's Classic comment.

" If Shep would just go home and try to fill the north half of his bathtub, he'd understand what the hell is going on in New Orleans right now."

OMG!

LOL

Let me tell thats been a big topic of discussion among alot of us. We could not believe how early the airlines canceled flights. There will be an investigation of that.

Just heard on CNN there are an estimated 60,000 in the SuperDome.

I can't say anything good at this point.

Katrina on the other hand killed less than 200 and while that is terrible, there was a warning.

cmurphy, you are a moron.

Mike, you know anything about this (I'm up here in Milwaukee, where we have a very special blend of boutique gas that just hit $3/gallon)?

They have the same ozone setup that gas stations have in Houston and other cities that have had ozone problems.

"What a horribly stupid thing to say. The recent Tsunami killed 100's of thousands of people, and they had no warning. Katrina on the other hand killed less than 200 "

Your optimism may be premature.

calling for a day of prayer for the state when people are still in attics, probably drowning, and the superdome is full of people about to die is the most stupid, silly thing I ever saw a leader do. You call for a day of prayer when the work of recovery is done.

She has dithered, didn't take the lead on Friday to demand and evac of No and doesn't understand how to lead here. And Landrieu and her politicizing the whole thing is despicable.

I won't cut her any slack as a leader. As a person, I feel for her and Mary. But their leadership and example here is weak and lame and inane.

Even water coming close to the top of a soil dam will start to force its way under and through.

I didn't know that....glad I live above Buford Dam.

So it costs them a bit of money, it is going to cost them far more in bad PR, as there are going to be congressional hearings (mark my word) and this will be brought up and harped on (with good reason.)

Did Blanco think to pick up the phone and call the CEOs of American and Southwest? There are procedures these airlines follow, and cancelling flights under these conditions is normal.

Airlines are past PR; they're hanging on by their fingernails, doing what it takes to survive.

Blanco is armchair quarterbacking with this gratuitous shot at the airlines.
