Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

NN, I've been lurking for days on your threads, getting more and more depressed with the situation....too many memories and connections to NO to enumerate...cousins I haven't heard from...places I know so well...So glad my sister & I were down there last April.

Thanks for all your dedication to keep these threads going.

Bouquets & kudos to you!

Thank you for your dedication to these threads.

The link for Slidell does not work (it's not just overloaded, I don't think).

Does anyone have a link that opens?

"Did anyone see the clip last night of Chris Matthews calling the gulf coast "The Redneck Riviera?"

Not to excuse that a-hole Matthews, but even the folks who go there (primarily Gulf Shores AL) call it that - and proudly.

I know I hope enough of us here will remember her shameful behavior when her reelction comes up. You are right, all of the previous city leaders and planners are the problem. This is shameful and criminal the absolute lack of planning for this.

I'd appreciate any updates as to the nature of what you're getting in OH throughout the day. We expect the remnants here in Toronto sometime this evening.

Hello Cincinnati! Love your town! Lived there back in the early 80's in Westwood. Still miss it. The Reds and Bengals are my favorite teams.

Yes. Didn't he say that to the governor of Alabama? He did say it to a very high level state official -- who QUICKLY but politely shot Chris down -- "We just call it the 'Gulf Coast', Mr. Mathews."

You're spot on.

That 15 BILLION dollars in aid to Africa doesn't get to the people anyway.

We need to take back our Pledge for foreign aid. We don't have it!

You have done a great job of providing local information. I appreciate it a lot. I just pray for those poor folks in NO and surrounding areas.

Morning! Sad news this AM and photos are heartwrenching.

Logistically, don't even know where they'll begin. Folks without food/water, etc., water still rising.

Anybody know if they'll start airlifting people out of there (I read somewhere though that both airports are flooded.)

No, no one has heard much of anything. They're calling Slidell a black hole. No communication of any type, not even ham radio is coming out of there.

I keep seeing FNC flashing "possible 26 billion damage" I predict this storm will cost way over 260 bilion.

Oh man I do so want to shout an epithet.

Let me paraphrase.

May they pleasure themselves manually.

Americans were all over the place during that tsunami. We know that's how it is. And Americans will handle this hurricane because they never run to OUR aid.

Not that we want them.

If a hurricane this size hit anywhere else on earth it would have been catastrophic. Sure, we've got some deaths. But if this hurricane hit say, Southeast Asia, the casualties would have been in the millions.

You know it and I know it. They don't build their houses to code, they don't think ahead, dictators and despots tend not to think in the long run.

This morning I am shocked at the extent of the damage.

Maybe I shouldn't be. It was all forecasted.

You know what else occurs to me? It's a damn, damn good thing those people were evacuated to the Superdome.

Damn good thing because most of those people were very poor or homeless. And most of them would be dead this morning had the FEDERAL government not intervened.

THIS is the story shoddy journalists should be investigating.
