Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

I heard yesterday that the casinos bring in $500million a DAY to the state of Mississippi. $500,000. $500 million a day would be an astounding sum of money, over $180 billion dollars a year.

"I think the plans for most major cities are going to have to include large-scale movement of people by rail -- freight trains, mainly. Load any rail car capable of carrying people, and just drag them out of town. Of all the modes of transportation available, trains can carry by far the most people in the fewest number of trips."
I sure hope that are talking about post or voluntary evacuation only. If not then it kind of reminds of another time when people were moved out on trains.

It varies from state to state, but many casinos (esp. Louisiana) are on bodies of water so they will probably float but would probably be ripped from their moorings by the heavy winds.
I imagine a hurricane would be necessary to get some of those old bitties to stop playing the slots long enough to seek shelter.

I'm listening to WLS out of Chicago and they just had a guy call in that said he's an insurance adjuster and is flying into Houston tomorrow and will be making his way to LA/NO.
They told him expect to be there for three months or more.
He was explaining that flood damage isn't covered, unless you by it through the gov't, and people should, in order to get the insurance and make his job easier, salvage all the things they can pack up the family and leave town.......and leave a candle burring on your way out.
To: gumboyaya
That's right. The Ogden is nearby too.
I can only hope that some of these curators had time to move these artifacts, paints, etc. to higher ground - or at the most, were able to get them out of town.

"But using a gun to take money from one citizen and give it to another is not compassion, it is extortion....."
If not assisting those in need (due to Katrina) is your protest than by all means follow where your logic takes you....I refuse to go there....I will never go there....
Today, ten's of thousands of Americans need are help....this argument should be left for another day....Forgive me, but how I feel about taxation, and constitutional dictates, and how our government collects and disperses revenue is not all that paramount at the moment when others are facing life and death at this very moment...

Our corporate office is in CDT New Orleans and lots of my coworker friends live there and in outlying areas. We have a field office there, on Canal Street. They got out of town, but it looks like they may have to shift operations for awhile. Payroll processing is there, too. Or at least it used to be.

I have a feeling it will take several hours for water to reach an equilibrium inside the bowl. IIRC, there is a lot of massive highway structure between the dome and FQ. I bet we hear of rising water in the quarter soon as water seeks the lowest points.

Screw the casinos
THe casinos are important because not only do they bring in about 500 million in tax revenue per day to MS, they also provide something like 14,000 jobs in the MS area.
These poor people have no housing and now no jobs

Between the casinos and Bourbaon street, maybe the storm had a moral purpose. And the purpose of other disasters ... earthquakes, fires, mudslides ... they all deserve it, right? Please just stop. You're making me sick.

I wouldn't be surprised if many of those who stayed did so just so they could take part in the looting. They are wading through feces-laden water to steal something that probably won't survive the week anyway. It is better to keep thou mouth shut than to open it and show thou ignorance.

Between the casinos and Bourbaon street, maybe the storm had a moral purpose.
The single worst hit area included the town of Pass Christian, which has no Casino.
And there was a gigantic Baptist Church completely destroyed on the MS coast as well.
What, pray tell, is the moral purpose of that?

Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard says there is no plumbing and the sanitary situation is getting nasty. He told WAFB-TV that he is carrying around a bag for his own human waste.Just wow.
