Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Info w/ sources I've been looking for. Please ping me on any further updates. I'm office bound. Our corporate office is in CDT New Orleans and lots of my coworker friends live there and in outlying areas. Thanks - OB1

"Is the Hwy 90 bridge near your Dad's? I think a CNN reporter was told not to got that route earlier because of the bridge.".....

I believe that bridge is in Bay St. Louis. My sister told me it was gone. Hwy 90 runs from one end of the coast to the other end.

Is it possible that the river is now feeding into the lake? If that were the case, water would continue to flow into NO, without the lake rising.

I don't know if this is possible or not, just occurred to me.

Ya know, with all this hapening, all I can think about is alligators and snakes! Just had a huge shiver.

Snakes I can understand. But wouldn't the gators been injured in the storm? /clueless

Yes---and that is their main source of income...so I don't think asking about the casinos...is a silly question.

Just heard on CNN that the Pentagon is having a meeting and will be getting National Guard TASK Force to take care of all of the 3 states, needs...

Once again, the key issue is not whether New Orleans should order an evacuation every time a hurricane is in the Gulf. Instead, the key question is why there was absolutely no plan to get those without cars out of a city below sea level. And the bonus question is how many other gaping holes are there in disaster plans around the country, at a time when we are worried about dirty bombs or biological attacks as well as natural disasters?

So is the Ogden around the corner. I cannot tell you how much art and antiques are in the homes there. I'm sure they did not have enough time to secure these things.

Just my guess being that they were earthen levees.

I'm fairly sure that's the case with most levees in the area. Along the MS, except for the downtown area. The one levee they are showing where the big breech is is actually concrete. But, you're right, most are earthen.

I kinda feel sorry for the looters in a way. They are probably so poor, probably uneducated, are so desperate that at a time like this, they can only think of material posessions. It's very sad.

What a big heart you have, Abigail! What nice compassion, and no, I am not being sarcastic.

Shep says they don't know where the water is coming from.. they know of some of the breeches from Ponchartrain, but are not certain about the river --yet.

From a map Torie posted, if it gets over 3.5 feet at Bourbon st. it will be from the river.

That is, of course, when some parishes ordered mandatory evacuations, and the voluntary ecavurations began. Whether it should have been mandatory versus voluntary is perhaps a reasonable discussion, but once the evacuation is ordered people need to pay attention and take responsibility.

Where's the Harrah's in NO. I was thinking it was sort of close to the Superdome?

":07 P.M. - (AP) -- A top casino executive is calling on the Mississippi Legislature to enact emergency legislation to keep the state's coast gaming industry alive.

Treasure Bay Casino President and CEO Bernie Burkholder says most of the casino hotels on the coast survived Hurricane Katrina, but several gambling barges suffered extensive damage. He says it could take several years to rebuild."

I can't believe this guy.

Between the casinos and Bourbaon street, maybe the storm had a moral purpose.

You're giving the storm credit for thinking and moral discernment?
