Wow! One of the downsides to not having tv or radio and avoiding internet news is that I just found about this hurricane in the last five minutes. I thought Katrina was some liberal war protester or something...

Then again, maybe this is an "upside."

Ok- I have a suggestion- would everyone who wants to discuss the merits and/or lack of merits of the Red Cross PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE start a separate discussion thread?

The thread is so fast moving and important - this isn't the place for long sidebars..

Thank you:)

I am especially anxious about Picayune, MS where I spent a few of my teenage years. It was dead in the path of the storm, and I haven't heard anything yet from there.

After years of lurking, I'd like to thank you. We can't get cable and my dial-up doesn't keep a stream going. You've been a lifeline. jennifer (I'm 'borrowing' your space Tux:)

Howlin, you're all so much more computer capable than I am at this sort of stuff.

Would you please start a Hurricane Katrina Images Thread?

NBC Nightly News showed this park. The reporter (not Brian Williams) said that the local residents insisted they go see the park, not to see the downed tress, but to see the still-standing statue of Jesus. That report was COOL!

Right now we are experiencing some sustained 30-40mph winds with gusts up to 50-60mph coming from the North; Go figure-the damn thing is South of here about 150 miles. Already we are losing electricity periodically and trees and limbs are falling everywhere. They closed schools tomorrow and we are expecting some real flooding. This is the first time a tropical storm has made it this far North in Mississippi with this much power. I expect a lot of trees and buildings to be damaged tonight. The center is expected to pass just 50 miles east of here tonight if not right over the top. Tupelo and Starkville are already having a time of it. This is quite strange and disconcerting but sure is a lot better than what it was this morning on the Gulf Coast.

I am glad that I worked on my barn roof back in June when I expected the first hurricane to pass over us with such strength. My heart goes out to the fellows at the South end of the state. I lived in Biloxi for four years and made a personal study of the swath of Camille which had hit the area four years before. Pass Christian and Long Beach were hamlets with a lot of slabs without homes on top of them. I hate to see the area get leveled again.

Their good fortune and your opportunity to be of service!

You are right! Thank you. You know, it was as much of a relief for those in SF to be able to let their loved ones know they were O.K., and not to worry.

My point being -- I have no doubts that those in the afflicted areas are not just coping with the devastation, but probably worrying about those worrying about THEM!

I've lived in quake areas all my life; the 1987 quake was... bad. But folks around the country were seeing NON-STOP footage of the "damage" areas, in their worry and concern. There were areas of SF that were doing better than others. I'll bet the automated "call diverters/auto messages" are on triple time, due Katrina.

FEMA rep: Will have to house at least 10,000 for several months. NOLA I-10 bridge is compromised. Don't want to call them breaches, but water is still spilling over some levees. Water still rising in some areas.

Not according to what my dad and his cousins had to say.

SHAEF ordered the ARC to charge for their services since the British RC could not afford to give their services for free. It was a wartime measure to preserve Tommy morale, reducing already building resentment against US GIs.

Of course, high level command desicions don't make as good a story as barracks room grousing.
