Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

Even in WWII, they failed the soldiers by charging them for donuts and coffee WHILE sucking up money from their parents/wives back in the states.
"If you have seen what they are showing on WDSU, I think you'd agree that there's no way to "hyperbolize" this."
Actually, they're lucky. If the winds were "perfect" another ten feet of water would have drowned NO.
To me, the residences show not much major wind damage, and the trees are standing.
Sure - I'll be up till about 10:00 CST and back on when it gets too noisy outside. Hot Dog is in the boro, thus the ping
Thanks
Was watching MSNBC internet feed until hardball came on with Chris and Chuckie -- then turned it off.
Did yall see that footage of the guy being rescued from the roof on OReilly? And that burning flooded house/resort?
Thank You, do you know where I can find a map of NO and the names of the parishes?
Thanks for the live stream.
"WUSA reporters say that there was five feet of water at Ernie K-Doe's mother-in-law's lounge."
I swear!
I've got lots of relatives in Nashville (Franklin). Keep us posted.
It is all about elevations, and what levee bowl you are in (there are 13 of them I have heard). Three of them leaked bad (St Bernard, the 9th ward (east NO), and Kenner. The French Quarter and the area near the river tend to be 5-10 feet about sea level. Parts of NO nearer the Lake but not right on the lake are about 5 feet below sea level.
It is mind boggling. Much worse than I envisioned.
I don't remember this much water in Hugo.
The tropical storm Katrina is heading toward that area. BECAUSE the many Tunica Casino's are in and AT sea level, they are in harms way.
The damage from this storm is not over yet.

Unfortunately, this flood damage is not covered by insurance. The feds (all of us, that is), are going to have to pay billions to clean this up.
Does Shep feel in danger of being harmed? He didn't say "No."
Looked like Metairie got a bit damp as well. Quite a few big cemeteries there.... you see them when you zip by on I-10 coming in from the airport.
There the RC goes. Getting my Baptist church to donate and then taking credit for the good deeds.
If you've read my posts, you'll know that I have been, and am darn grateful for all the help I received from all the organizations and the fabulous military .. including the Red Cross.
