Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

Tropical Storm 12
There have been an awful lot of reports like that on FR, especially in the weeks after 9/11, when the Red Cross was caught diverting funds raised "for 9/11" to all sorts of other projects. That scandal was serious enough that then ARC President Bernadine Healy was forced to resign under the heat of Congressional investigations.
I have a fondness for that area. One of the races I ran in the Gulf Coast Running Club in the 80s was the "Pass to the Bay" and did 6.4 miles, a bit over 10K between the towns. I am picturing a bridge that could have been taken out or damaged by the storm. I speak now from a safe distance inside the DC Beltway.
Round one of our tornado scare is over. Safe and sound in Alpharetta, Georgia. Even the cats decided to come home for this one.
Judging by the map I think we will be in the basement a few more times tonight.
Thanks for the concern!
Please try to get down there and enjoy yourself if you can get in, they could use the cash.
I thought it was a Cat 4 when it hit NO?
The Salvation Army isn't a Catholic organization.
Maybe the continued media nightmare scenarios in the past that didn't come to fruition helped people become lax.
I will give twice as much just to piss you off...
why dont you drop it?
That water is moving fast too. Snakes. Disease.
They say it'll get dicey here in Nashville about midnight or 1am.
You are right. It is like stealing someones life.
That's the St. Louis (the king, not the city) Cathedral of New Orleans.
I was thinking the same... thank god it missed the city, that thing would have been a giant tomb.
Very glad to hear that you are all safe. Please continue to do so throughout the night! Did it actually touch down in your area?
I'm out of town, my wife and kids are in Woodstock, GA..was that a doppler tornado in Alpharetta or a touchdown?
Never asked for assistance from anyone and I've been in this world for a very long time.
Did you say y'all were in Memphis?
Thanks for reporting in....Glad you're OK!
Sister Mary Brownroots?
It will hit Nashville late in the night and early morning. I am in sumner co. Kids are exited (No School) lol
