Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

People's nerves are on edge in many cases. Most of the time people should try to be less jumpy and not immediately assume the worst about every post. I realize this is very hard when one is concerned about family or friends.
If you are in that situation, remember that all of us on these threads are here together and wishing the best for you. If the threads are not allowed to flow, the threads will be a ghost town and that doesn't serve any purpose either.
The official criteria for the Saffir-Simpson categories are wind and wind only. For classifying a storm in a category, the surge height and pressure are irrelevant.
It's going to be a Cat 4 at initial landfall and a Cat 3 at the second LA/MS border landfall, and I don't see that changing.
The weakening at the end didn't reduce the surge...it was already built up.

The tsunami is like the surge in that it raises ocean levels and moves inland. However, a storm surge also has waves coming in on top of it and very strong winds - so IMO it is more destructive for the same sea-level rise.
But it also affects a much smaller area. And there is plenty of warning for a hurricane, for those who choose to heed them.
I am certain that kamp cindistan, under al-sheehani, is mentally blaming President Bush for Katrina. LOL!
What was the lowest pressure?
My husband was able to reach my sister-in-law in Slidell on her cell, so apparently the hospital is okay. She is fairly well sedated though and didn't have a clue that she had just been through a hurricane, so we still don't know how the city has fared or the fate of other friends. Slidell has flooded badly in the past and they are situated next to the Pearl River.

I don't know. All the sensors failed in the path, so it will be up to post storm analysis. Andrew was still strengthening as it hit FL, this was slowly weakening or at least holding its own. That makes a definate difference.

Been raining here in N Central MS for quite a while....REALLY getting heavy now. Pouring. I can't tell too much about the wind right now. I am surrounded by huge oak trees but can't see much from inside except the trunks. Thank God this house is well insulated so I can't hear too much of what's going on outside, either. But I have a strong feeling this will be a long, long night.

The surge height of this in Mississippi was comparable to the tsunami in Sri Lanka and Thailand (but 1/3rd the height of the tsunami in Banda Aceh.)
While you have wind waves on top of hurricane surge, in tsunami surge you have it coming in and rapidly draining over and over again (remember the incredible force of the video of the tsunami DRAINING out to sea) surge just comes in, so in terms of physical force I suspect a 20 foot tsunami is worse than a 20 foot surge, marginally.
The key aspect as you note is warning, and the suddeness of the tsunami, in terms of human death tolls.
