Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

Thanks, our family is used to "bad" news, so this is a plus.
I think that you are just a wonderful, kind person that would never say anything bad about someone. Trust me, the horror stories never end.
We're trying both cell and landline. Our friend in Northern Alabama just called us. Her mother lives in Biloxi and evaced to Memorial Hospital. She got a very weak signal but no real news there.
Hurricane Watch calling Slidell, LA

The Red Cross seems to regard disasters as dandy fundraising events. They won't get one cent from me.
Cholera, Typhus, and several other nasties that tend to follow flood and disaster...bleach or iodine is much better....
No Home Depot....Started working for them a few years back....part of their "giving back" attitude is to be there when people need them....without publicity....They had truck moving before the second plane hit WTC and continue to provide FEMA workers with what they needed....never sent a bill.
I got a first hand report from Bay Front in Mobile. It's not good. The water is still pretty high right now, but has subsided somewhat. Pops says Bay Front has been washed out in two places he knows of, and a few folks had some of the Bay in their houses. Lots of houses are green because they're plastered with leaves. No pecans (again) this year it looks like.
Hurricane watch to Slidell, LA
1.) Slidell reported 138 mph winds during the peak of the storm.
omg..it's a shell.
Any news of Slidell yet?
ping to clarification of USS Alabama.
Just saw an interview on one of the cable's with someone from St Tammany...lots of trees down..some roofs off..the reporter was talking with a resident who said he couldn't believe the damage...no word on injuries. People did seem to be up and around.
IX ???
If this keeps up, I'm gonna have to review my Roman numerals! Besides, I think 1500 Upperline is OK.
Sorry, the Red Sox are on (2 homers in the first already), gotta go.
Maybe I'll even go out to a neighborhood bar to watch the game, sit next to a "live" girl, smell her perfume, see if my voice still works, yadayadayada. My butt might go numb on the bar stool, and my arm might get sore hoisting 16 ouncers, but at least I won't get any blisters on my typing fingers, LOL.
I'll be fun reading all these threads, SLOWLY, for many insomniac nights to come however, thanks for doing this.
Miami is talking to Slidell EOC now.
No. And, dreadfully, not from Bay St. Louis, Gulfport and Biloxi. What little we've heard has been bad.
"Memphis is a suburb of Mississippi."
Was it camille that flooded Memphis? My mom is there - big trees in her yard that are always a worry.
