Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

I hope it's "just" West Nile.
They've got bigger problems than skeeters. Last I knew there was a don't-drink-the-water order out for NO. If that's still there case, there is an entire city in need of potable water.
Can you say West Nile...
Right you are. All that water will be a mosquitoes breeding ground of unfathomable proportions.
What is that supposed to mean?
Thanks Mike, I'll call my aunt(in Maine), and see if my cousin is okay.
The economic damage will take longer to judge. I'm especially worried about the offshore oil facilities, but there's still a human side to what will happen in affected communities.
That still has to play out.
looks like a new roof!
Oops I see you already found that picture!!!
"I hope it's "just" West Nile."
There's a whole slew of third-world style diseases that might become a problem if people don't take care with their water supplies... bring it to a rolling boil for several minutes at least, or they could sanitize it with chlorine bleach, can't recall the proper measure, is it two parts per hundred? I'll see what I can Google for that.
The Beau Rivage is located on the SE corner of the intersection of I-110 and US 90 in Biloxi.
Red Cross on the national level got a black eye off 9/11 on how large amounts of money was handled.
I will be directing my donation prolly to the Salvation Army.
They happened to play the phone call from Mobile, and now it seems that it was very poor word choice by the official.
To paraphrase : We are having disasterous flooding, and we think that one of our states Icons may not have survived. It appears that the USS Alabama memorial has been completely submerged, it is just gone.
Now after reading numerous print stories it appears that what is submerged is the park and all of the buildings. I am hopeful that that is the case and that the Alabama is not what is "submerged"
Remember Pearl Harbor!
Yep..it's about to get unbearable. This is what we went through last summer in Florida. Amazing how fast ice becomes a luxury item.
A year later and I still FEEL grateful when I turn the faucet on and water comes out..a light switch..a fan..
Yep, sounds like a great time ahead.
Heard today an estimate that 87 percent of the residences in Orleans parish have sustained damage. 25 percent have been either severely damaged or destroyed. I think they estimate that more than that, 91 percent (I think they said) of the homes in Plaquemines are damaged.
They had a lower number for St. Bernard and Jefferson, but I think that estimate will go up with so many homes in or under water.
I'm not sure bugs are the only contaminents they have to worry about. Is a don't-drink order different from a boil-water order? Because if so, tap water probably shouldn't be ingested, boiled or otherwise :)
