People looking at radar composites should realize that the Columbus and Brandon AFB radar sites in Mississippi are down, as well as that site north of Ponchatrain. That "gap" in the southern part of the circulation may be a data gap - and folks in that area may still be feeling the effects of feeder bands that aren't showing up on the composites.

This was and is a real storm. And it's a disaster for all those who were and are in its path.

Last night when I went to bed I expected the very worst. My eyes were tearing up.

A shift in intensity and track barely averted the worst case scenario, and I didn't see it until this morning. I would have slept better if I had stayed up another 90 minutes.

But it's plenty bad wherever she hit. I realize it's hard for news crews to get around to the affected spots right now, but this was and is a very bad storm.

I see that there are two more areas of interest between here and Africa. Hopefully they'll amount to nothing. We're going to need a rest.

Yes, the storm was still a sizeable cat5 all the way up to the coast... it hit at the cusp of cat5. It had also been churning away in the same general direction for a few days. As soon as I hear Cantore report 10' surge at his location fairly well inland, I knew there was a problem. The wave forecasts with this storm were incredible...

Like I said, I'll feel better when some regions start making noise.

You are right. With the force of this monster, there could be all sorts of "spinoff" tornadoes. Weather has been quite funky today.

I'm in West Pensacola. We still have strong gusts here. Generators are running.

First report I saw was that a Drilling Rig is what had impacted the I-10 bridge, but it is also possible that it is the USS ALABAMA, which has reportedly "disappeared" from it's moorings

Everytime I hear about Camille its stats become more powerful after every re-telling. Next we know its barometric pressure was 700 and peoples heads litterally popped like balloons from it.

The nasty little story about Andrew was that thousands were killed but NOAA reported only a couple of dozen, massive cover up there.

"Slidell - some storm chasers in Slidell said that they were able to drive out earlier this afternoon. They said that it was "no cat 5" there in Slidell. Sounded like there was a lot of water damage but that it wasn't total destruction."

Thanks for the info - that's the best news so far.

Granddad would probably enjoy floating away, old seafaring shipbuilder that he was. Trent Lott would rather stay put, no doubt.

...well, I could say for certain that Lott's HAIR would stay put, no matter what....

Slidell news:

WGNO reporter in Slidell: Came in on 12
Lots of trees down on houses, loss of roofs, bowling alley had lost its side. Days Inn lost roof, could see in the rooms. Trinity rehab centersome damage, patients ok.

Some houses they saw had lost roofs, some had trees hit them. Trees and powerlines down everywhere in Slidell. Some people walking around, mostly deserted.

Only could make it a mile from interstate because of trees and powerlines.

People are not being allowed in because of the danger

High water in mall parking lot. roads near interstate don't have water on them, but reporters haven't gotten into town very far yet.
