President Bush Vows to Help With Border Problems NewsMax.com Wires Monday, Aug. 29, 2005

EL MIRAGE, Ariz. -- President Bush said Monday he will work with Gov. Janet Napolitano and other border governors to secure the U.S.-Mexico border, where political leaders have been calling for help to deal with waves of illegal immigrants.

Bush told a crowd in this retirement community that he understands the federal government's obligation to enforce the border.

"It's important for the people of this state to understand, your voices are being heard in Washington, D.C.," he said.

Making reference to Sen. Jon Kyl, an Arizona Republican who introduced Bush here, the president said, "This senator and this Congress are going to work closely with the administration to make sure we have the resources necessary to do our responsibility, which is to enforce this border. And we'll do so."

Bush made the trip west from his Texas ranch to lend a hand to the administration's effort to sell older Americans on the value of a prescription drug benefit that begins next year for Medicare patients.

Trying to combat confusion about and criticism of the new government drug plan, Bush was making appearances in both Arizona and California Monday to talk it up.

After spending the night in San Diego, he speaks on Tuesday at the Naval Air Station North Island there to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. His remarks focus on fighting terrorists and the ongoing campaign in Iraq. They recall the Aug. 14, 1945, Japanese surrender that came just days after the United States incinerated the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with atomic bombs.

There has been indications that efforts to build support for the Medicare drug benefit - including a few other appearances around the country by Bush - are paying off. Congress allocated about $300 million to an awareness campaign.

A recent survey from the Kaiser Family Foundation found for the first time that people were as likely to have a favorable view of the plan as to have an unfavorable view. Still, the survey found that more people do not plan to enroll than do.

The prescription drug benefit kicks in Jan. 1. About 43 million beneficiaries will be able to choose from two or more private plans that offer drug coverage.

Enrollees will pay a monthly premium averaging about $32, but the amount will vary among regions, and millions of poor people will pay nothing. Beneficiaries will also have a $250 deductible, meaning they will have to pay that amount for their prescriptions before the drug plan covers expenses. Again, millions of poor beneficiaries will not have any deductible.

After spending more than four weeks operating from his Texas ranch, Bush returns to Washington on Friday. © 2005 The Associated Press

The town seemed like an odd choice. Parts of El Mirage
are heavily Hispanic and very poor, burdened with crime,
and not exactly set up for photo-ops. There is a good
donut shop on Grand Ave, though.

Well, finally.

FoxNews chose to cut off the president after the statement on the hurricane. All I got to hear was "and, I want to say this about immigration"..........

Maybe we ought to forward this article to FoxNews, NBC, et al to give them the news.

I say - FreeRepublic evolve into a news service as well one of the greatest "blogs". Afterall, we get more news here in more detail than on any of the MSM/cable outlets. And, we have reporters on the ground all over the country. We just need a verification of news reported procedure.

And, we definitely need an alternate news source since all we get is filler, propaganda, political biases, and designated stories with our current sources.

I think the world of President Bush. But on the issue of illegal immigration he is every bit as gutless as the Democrats.

I agree

If the Kyl/Cornyn bill doesn't allow the 'guests' to bring their families, then that is indeed a mark of superiority over the terrible McCain/Kennedy bill, but I have a hard time believing that such a provision will ever survive anything passed by the Senate (House is a different matter). I can just imagine the endless parroting of sob stories that will be used against it.

"This is good news if Dubya is pulling for the Kyl bill I think it's the best one yet. At least it has zaps employers for hiring illegals, doesn't allow anchor babies, enables local law enforcement to enforce immigration laws, etc."

doesn't allow anchor babies. <---Not in any version of the bill Ive ever seen. Youre thinking of Tancredos bill. You think employer sanctions will hold up for long? I dont. You support Kyl/Cornyn cause its "the best one yet?" Is that the same as "not AS horrible as the others"?

I believe Bush has been told by someone (Rove?) that illegal immigration is a win-win proposition for the GOP from a party growth perspective. First, they believe the new citizens will be more inclined to support the GOP since this happened under Bush and second, the big donors are probably the largest employers of illegal immigants. Unfortunately if you're not in either of those groups you get screwed.

The RNC called last week and asked me to donate. I told them in no uncertain terms, "not until Bush gets on the right side of this issue."

After 4-years and 7-months of no substantive action on the issue of immigration reform, I don't believe the President intends on making any serious effort to resolve this critical issue. Bush and the Congressional GOP ignore the American peoples desire for the federal govt to address the problems associated with illegal immigration.

The 4TH anniversay of 9-11 is less then one month away. God help us all.

Read his soundbite again. He didn't say he was pulling for the Kyl bill. Read it again.

This is good news if Dubya is pulling for the Kyl bill I think it's the best one yet.

But it's not the best one we can get. Just look at the history of these proposals - the longer we keep the pressure on, the more they relent. There's no need to sell ourselves short if we don't have to, because the public is solidly on our side. The Kyl bill states that illegals have to leave after five years. Silly me, but I thought they had to leave now, which is the whole reason why they're called illegal. Whatever punishments or penalties that would be appropriate five years from now, would be appropriate now as well. So why not impose them now?

And really, all we really need is proper border security, which can be done quite effectively and with low cost. Once we have that, then the problem of dealing with illegals already here will become much easier.

Are you kidding? Bush better not come out for McCain-Kennedy (which, knowing Bush, he will) or Cornyn-Kyl, both are amnesties.

No hes not. Bush wants a guest worker program and a border that keeps terrorists out. Anything else, like massive increases in permanent residency and citizenship, dont interest him much. My own theory is that the GOP wants to form a white republican and hispanic co-majority. By winning the hispanic vote by increasing the hispanic population radically they think they can cement power for the foreseeable future.

He doesnt have to come out for either. He will wait for the bill to come out of committee. The parts of the bill he doesnt like will be taken out. (basically any parts of the bill that most of us support) The bill will then be sold as very "conservative". The best parts of Kyl/Cornyn were never meant to survive. They are meant to mollify the base. Deceptive.

By allowing the country to get flooded with illegals, we're setting up a voter base for the Democrats. On top of this, GOP irrationality on illegal immigration is not endearing them to American citizens, either - white, black, or Hispanic.

They're doing this because they want to create an EU-style zone for our part of the globe. There's nothing more to it than that.

That's EXACTLY the case. In all likelyhood, the immigration bill that passes will be Cornyn-Kyl. McCain-Kennedy is to liberal for the house of representatives and Tancredo's bill is to conservative for the senate. Cornyn-Kyl is in the middle of those two.

Tancredo's bill is to conservative for the senate.

It needs to be constantly borne in mind that Tancredo's bill is not "too conservative" for the American people. Get the message out to them, and the Senate can be dragged along kicking and screaming.

...zaps employers...

LOL, the laws on the books today were supposed to do the same thing.

Think of this as "campaign finance reform that isn't". This is immigration reform that isn't. Get it?
