“bodies are floating in the water”

I hate to be morbid, but could these be old bodies from graveyards?

Probably not unforunately.

Not full bodies.

They bury the dead above the sea level in N.O. so it is possible that caskets may be floting around, unless they popped open, who knows. I guess anything can happen.

It's possible... with such a high water table
there, caskets and bodies have been known to
float rise up to the surface before in the
New Oleans area..that's why there are so many
above ground crypts in their graveyards...
and so many stories about people rising from
the dead that are in the LA folklore.

But i doubt it. These poor souls probably drowned
this morning.

If so, no big deal. But, these are likely to be recent.

You're probably right, they were talking about this possibility on Fox yesterday.

"I hate to be morbid, but could these be old bodies from graveyards?"

I did hear on the radio news that coffins were floating about.

Yes. One of the first things that happens during a flood of a low-lying town like New Orleans is that coffins float away. And I wouldn't be surprised if cheap coffins fall apart and the bodies float separately.

They could if they were old bodies.

not likely, NO burials are in crypts above ground, and after the caskets are put in, they are cemented shut.

Old bodies don't float. What makes fresh bodies float is bacteria releasing gasses inside as the bodies decompose. It makes them bloat and float. It is sort of morbid. Sorry if it offends anyone.

If they're seeing bodies, I doubt it (unless they were recently buried)....

When I toured NOLA, they told us that the crypts are set up so that they can store the remains for 1 year + 1 day, and then they go back in and there's nothing but a skeleton left. The skeleton can then be stored in the crypt... this is how one average sized tomb holds the remains of over 200 nuns.

Unlikely. Fresh, perhaps, but not old.

You're not being morbid. It's a possibility.

Well, they could be, but most of those bodies have probably already decomposed, and more than likely they would just be bones. Let's hope the bodies are not those of people who were killed because they didn't evacuate like they were ordered to do.

Terrible....
