"Nagin said at least 20 buildings in the city had collapsed and that it might be 48 hours before residents would be allowed back to their homes to assess the damage."
This is the reason so many people stay in the first place.
Where does the government get the idea that they can tell people when and if they may return to their homes?
What happens when people return and the homes have been condemned and entry by the owners is not permitted, even to retrieve their personal property?
I'm sure King George the socialist will arrive on the scene with plenty of our tax dollars ready to be spent on various "aid" programs.

Considering that a lot of 'poor people' live in the 9th I can't wait for the race racketeering demagoguery to get started on this one. The feds haven't been genarous to NOLA in funding raising the height of the levees and in paying for maintenance and reinforcement, ipso facto 'Bush killed those people'.
To: Smogger
did the Lake break through the levees and flood the city? or is this flooding just from the rain?

I don't have any sympathy for these people, they were told to EVACUATE, evacuate means LEAVE, if you chose to stay - you suffer the consequences, it's not like they weren't warned over and over again, it serves them right.

" Get Out! Evacuate! Do it NOW! This is a very serious storm..it will kill you! Leave NOW! Drive, hitchhike or walk, but leave this city NOW.....etc."There are bodies floating in the water.
Can't say they didn't get the message, kin ya?

I recall hearing this morning that once mains power was lost, generators powering the pumps wouldn't start. Reminded me of that similarly well managed northern city (Detroit maybe?) whose sewage system failed last winter due to backup generators failing to start.

Sh-t! I remember eating at a greasy spoon in Bywater. Got to talk with many of the locals too, all cool people. Sad to see this happen.
Scares me to think what a Cat 5 would look like.

I think the government should have better plans in place to evacuate those who have no access to transportation out of the city for times like this, when it is an absolute emergency.
Why didn't they use the public transportation system to get those people OUT? Why shut it down & leave them to fend for themselves? Doesn't sound like very good planning to me.

It's all Bush's fault. He didn't sign Kyoto. He's not doing enough against global warming,we have the National Guard in Iraq and Afghanistan, we're not doing enough for the poor people and they are the people dying in La.& Miss. This is just a sampling of what the anti-American democRATS are saying. I'm sure they'll blame Bush for the fire-ants, snakes and alligators. I wish he would fight back or at least have someone speak up for him.

Mayor Nagin issued a "boil water" recommendation for water in the city - except for Algiers and the CBD due to a water main line break that may have compromised the water. This sounds like they managed to splice the break back together underwater, no mean feat.
