From an AP article on Drudge, I hope it's ok to post:

"On historic Jackson Square, two massive oak trees outside the 278-year-old St. Louis Cathedral came out by the roots, ripping out a 30-foot section of ornamental iron fence and straddling a marble statue of Jesus Christ, snapping off only the thumb and forefinger of his outstretched hand."

Saudis offering free sand for sandbags I hear, they even have instructions on how to pack it yet the directions are in arabic thus we never get it right.....we have to pick it up and refuel on their gas of course.

Good allies are important in time of need.....

Having never lived through a hurricane, I can't even wrap my mind around what's going on right now. Television video cannot accurately capture the horror.

Can we reserve this thread for storm damage reports only?

What about folks who need recipes for dishes such as red beans and fire-ant casseroles, or cotton-mouth gumbo!

Sheesh!

Cellular internet, laptops... even those little Blackberry things can post on the internet, they just have very tiny buttons. :~D

I'm sure the Weather Channel reporters have a lot of weatherproof equipment. But just a garden variety satellite phone would suffice to phone in this report. He's doing it because it's his job, but it sounds like it may be his last report for this storm (hopefully not his last report ever).

For anybody else who was out there wondering...the Gulfport AFRH is an 11-story building.

The USA will recover, I wonder if the world will help...

No, they expect us to take cure of them and ourselves at the same time.

My first experience with a hurricane was Hurricane Lili in Southcentral LA in 2003. The eye of Lili crossed our home with 110 mph winds. Apparently, a tornado ripped our 41x10' porch roof off and threw it over our house (it cleared the house without touching the roof or our chimney - 20 feet high) into our backyard. It was amazing the damage to homes and businesses all over. It was a surreal experience. I cant' image what 140 mph winds can do. Nothing would surprise me.

And it's so hard keeping up with all the original snappy comments about blaming Bush or Jessie Jackson or foreign aid. Much more important than the damage and loss of life.

Trying to control everyone's mood on a live event thread (or any thread) is a messy thing... the more you try to control it, the more distracted and cluttered it gets. You'd be better off sticking to AP releases if you don't want FReeper input, both useful and not.

I've been listening to Jim Bzstardi of Accuweather throughout the weekend. He's been consistently saying not to be fooled by signs of weakening. He said that Katrina could be a Cat 3 by landfall and would still pack a larger wallop than conditions would indicate. He took one of the FNC anchors to task yesterday for saying this storm was weakening. It appears he was right. Prayers for all.

I'm in Houston. We are WAY over our average for getting hit by a hurricane. This is like watching the neighbor's house getting ravaged and not being able to do anything about it. And knowing you're going to get it too one day.

We had a Tropical Storm Allison four years ago that devastated us, killed about 20 people and destroyed much of the Texas Medical Center, where I work. Repairs are still not complete. Even that was not the fearsome thing a hurricane is. I know the fear I get in my gut when one of them monsters starts'a bearin' down on you. Like a tornado that doesn't stop.

What about folks who need recipes

Oh god so true. Not to mention the personal attacks, inappropriate comments, detailed memories of storms long passed, etc, etc, etc.

I would even vote to ask that the well wishes and prayer posts be curtailed so we can just compile storm damage reports on this one thread.

I am at work and was in meetings all morning. I have no idea what is going on. I am sure I am not alone.
