You can see the hurricane move east a bit. That is the jog being talked about. As for the destructive force of the winds, the NE quadrant of the eyewall usually produces more serious damage. NO was spared that.

That reminds me of the Fish and Game poster urging people to wear bells on their shoes and to pack pepper spray when in Brown Bear country.

Down Further on the memo was a guide to ID bear dropping. Black Bear was small, purple, and full of berries. Brown Bear poop had bells and spelled like pepper.

The Industrial Canal runs north/south on the east side of NO, from the Lakefront Airport on the north to the Miss. River, with the Intercoastal Waterway intersecting it from the east about half way down.

He said he didn't know how many people had evacuated, and there was massive flooding, so they won't be able to deploy for awhile to start helping people who are stranded.

Damn, my son, who is home on leave from Iraq, just called and checked in early from leave and volunteered to go to NO for relief duty. The USMC Duty officer said that he had a LOOOOOONG roster of Marines gearing up to go and help. Where do we get young men like these????

There has been quite a bit about this on Discovery Channel and National Geographic Channel in the last couple of years. It is a very serious issue, but how to resolve it is an entirely different thing... after all, who wants to take down the levies on the Mississippi to allow the silt to free-flow into the Gulf once again? or the Levies around New Orleans that hold back the Mississippi and the Lake?

In the 'old' days they delt with the floods which washed the silt through and kept everyone at the same land-level. Then we decided to control mother nature... goes back to the "for every action" axiom.

The County Donegal in me says every hurricane should remind us of Noah's Flood and our need to repent for having offended God individually and corporately. Modern Americans -- even secularists -- still have that percolating underneath the surface. And it is so true that it hurts.
