That's inches per hour... Not total inches.

Graphic on FNC: Pumps in New Orleans can only handle 2 inches of rain. Inches. Not feet. That has GOT to be a typo.

I think that's correct. The pumps can handle 2 inches per hour is what I heard earlier. Unfortunately most of the water is pumped into Lake Pontchartrain, so they don't help if the lake is overflowing.

That is a designation of rain per hour, not standing water. 2" may or may not be the correct figure. There will be significant rain in inches per hour for a part of the strom but that will reduce as the rain bands move out.

Why has Fox gone to an alert because Harrigan is outside? I am tired of watching him. Why doesn't he interview some people in the hotel?

I do not know the area

That is clear, because you were somewhat wrong in your assessment. The wind damage would have been worse if this had hit straight on or to the west, but the real danger is the catastrophic overtopping of the levees by wind driven lake storm surge from the north and west filling the bowl to 15-25' deep with floodwaters. So far we don't know if that has/will take place, but the worst case for that, according to the LSU engineer who modelled and predicted this, is the eye passing just to the east of the city. Right now it may or may not be far enough east to avoid that, we just don't know.

I am only able to follow on-line so I can't tell where the roof failed. I was specualting that if it failed on the leeward side as the storm approached, it would be on the winward side after it passed - taking wind directly into the building. Or vice versa. The 180 degree change in wind direction could add more stress.

Just saw pictures on TV of the Superdome. Massive structure. As I was wondering how they would repair that it just occurred to me: How did they put a roof on that thing in the first place? It's awfully far off the ground. Anyone know?

So, are they ever going to let Harrigan back inside or should he be contemplating his fate? Why does it seem as if we may see him being swept away? And you know his cameraman is cursing him.

I hope they are wrong. I think that the media wants to make this storm look much worse than what it really is because for the 48 hours they have been hyping it at the worst storm to ever hit the United States and they just do not want to be proven wrong in their predictions as they usually are most of the time.

Hurricane Katrina may cost U.S. insurers more than $30 billion, which would make the storm the most expensive to hit the United States, a storm modeler said.

A $30 billion payout would make Katrina more expensive than Hurricane Andrew, which resulted in more than $20 billion of claims when it plowed through southern Florida in 1992.
