Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

This one will do damage, I believe, but not as much as is being hyped now.
Still...prayers for the people.
No way!!!
White bread, put butter all over, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon and raisins on top, then toast in the broiler till the edges are brown.
I make it for my eldest grandson, started when he was a tot and when he visits he can hardly wait for it. Our bond is over cinnamon toast!
Thanks.
Therefore, to me, it is comforting to see the recipe talk...it would make me MORE nervous if it weren't here..
We all know these are high stress level threads, and I see nothing wrong with having a distraction here and there (as in recipe and song stuff), because we all know we're just anxious for the end results...
I'm concerned for relatives in Mississippi...
New Orleans time? (Aren't they Central?)
Really, bad vacation then.
I thought it was strange he would be doing field reports.
A friend once told me he expensed a few rounds of Molsons as "barley soup" hence my post :)
Thank you for good info. It is not fun having to go through all the chatter to find facts.
I'd get even fatter at your house...[g]!!!!
For anyone wanted to get a feel for early NO (1840) I recommend the Benjamin January mysteries by Barbara Hambly. When I hear about the possibility of toxic flood waters I remember reading about the yellow jack plagues, with bodies simply thrown over the walls of the cemeteries, stacked six feet high... and the constant floods. And speaking of floods, I remember trick or treating in flood waters in Houston in the fifties... I can't believe our parents let us out.. rats and water snakes come to mind.
anyway, prayers for all these people.
Press Conference: "Storm is slowing down"
Drudge headline: "65ft. Waves Offshore"
It is a bright line in the sand for people who live here.
Was listening to the radio this evening...One "expert" pointed out that many people do not own cars and are unable to move to higher ground.... An oceanolgist said he expected the majority of non sky scraper building would be completely submerged. My step daughter and neighbors are resolved that their homes will be a total loss....They're between the Lake and French Quarter.
I suspect he meant Central.
Good Lord! You all must be wreck (I had 2 kids in harm's way on 9-11). The waiting is brutal.
Special prayers for your son-in-law.
"Well, if you venture into the cesspool that is DU, you will find that they blame this all on Kyoto, and the Bush rejection....."
Someone needs to remind them that 98 members of the Senate voted against Kyoto... when Clinton was in office.
It would be ok but it has turned into the recipe thread instead of a little distraction.
I'm wondering -- is there a thread on Free Republic for folks outside the immediate area impacted by the hurricane who would like to offer temporary shelter & assistance for the people who have evacuated ? A lot of them do not have any place definite to go -- and a lot of the hotels/motels west & north are full up -- or the people barely had the money to buy gas & get out, not enough to pay for hotel room & food.
I see that some of the liberal blogs and websites are taking posts from people offering shelter -- I'm sure we conservatives are equally generous as those #$$%^E& libbies.
The local guy is giving a briefing on WWL said the NWS said there is no eastern movement -- it is due north.
I agree with you, I'm more interested in the comments concerning the storm.
Some are trying to turn this thread into a religious or cooking thread.
