Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

There's a link to notify them of down cams, I wonder if we should let them know :D
The real problem is that once any water goes over any "low spot" in a levee, it quickly erodes a "channel" into the levee, breaching it not just at the top, but for almost its entire height (rather like the graphic in post 2056.
It's like the bursting of a dam -- the water isn't just "spilling" over the top anymore, it's rushing out in a torrent, and the entire body of water which used to be held in check is now emptying itself into the other side of the levee. Before long the net effect is as if the levee wasn't there at all.
In short, once a levee starts to go at all, it's pretty much *gone*.
We're not in a boarded up house.
I figured since we're all losing power I'd lean on the internet connection till it goes out.
I don't see the usualy haze of lights to the south like I'm used to. I imagine most of Covington is going dark. Probably not too good in the city right now.
ParadeCam and StreetCarCam are the same cam
Parade Cam back on - That's one tough webcam! LOL The manufacturer should be proud... Emergency street light has come back on as well.
got up to see the 4 AM report, and am hopeful that the pressure is up, and let us all pray that it keeps rising.
Shep on Fox news just now sounded upbeat because of the news that the cane seems to be weakening, and heading more toward the east of NO. I am confused, however, from from reading the weather guys on their forums arguing about which side would be better for the cane to head for...
I have learned enough not to pay much attention to wind reports, but to the "millebars" which is a better indicator, or so they say, of what is going on within the cane.
Dang... my strongest powerpack is beeping telling me I have only a couple minutes of power left for the modem. Gonna try and save it for around 6AM
And once it goes, what remains of the levee prevents the water from receeding once the storm is over.
ParadeCam aka StreetCarCam is back up
Yeah ParadeCam! Welcome back!
"Paradecam is down - the light went off across the street and then the feed gave out."
What am I doing wrong?? I've got paradecam on dialup, and it's still showing images -- lights and everything...
Of course, according to the time-stamp on the images, I'm running a couple of minutes behind real-time, so that may have changed when I check back....
Fox news reporting that eye of storm may miss New Orleans. Winds weakening, pressure rising. All good news.
Stay safe.... God Speed...
Check in when ya can
Prayers up!
Any news on how high Lake Pontchartrain is ?
Oh boy, I need some sleep. bbl

Looks like NO dodged a bullet. I reckon all those prayers helped.
