Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

Alot of people on the news that they are interviewing in the shelters right now are saying that thanks to the Mayor's warnings they finally decided to leave. Most said it's the first time their families have ever left in the face of a hurricane.

Three Nursing Home Residents Die During Hurricane Evacuation

BATON ROUGE, La. The hurricane evacuation has turned deadly in Louisiana.

Three people being bused to a Baton Rouge church died: one aboard the bus, another at the church and the third at a hospital. They were being moved from New Orleans.

The coroner's office in East Baton Rouge Parish isn't saying yet how the three people died but says many other people riding on the same bus were dehydrated.

He says some of the elderly people already were "pretty fragile."

Travelers reported the trip on the evacuation route from New Orleans to Baton Rouge was taking several hours because of traffic jams.

Decided to get some sleep while I could. Real high winds. Real dark so it's hard to see but I imagine a lot of trees are swaying. My dad saw a transformer blow up in the distance. Right then my neighbor who has WST electric lost their lights.

The RT powering the DSL uses WST so I imagine by sunrise my internet will be down.

The weather looks realy ugly and I imagine it'll be several times worse in about 12 hours.

Have a bit of news from earlier--Tulane Hospital moved their Emergency Room to the third floor. They were full capacity with 163 patients, and new three ER patients came in from the SuperDome.

here is a picture of the levee near san diego (san ysidro) Calif ...it is a flood control channel in case of excess rains or if the Rodriguez dam in Mexico breaks..it serves as an open sewer channel complete with Tijuana "brown trout" occasionally floating by..

Those (illegal aliens)getting ready to enter the US illegally used to drive their Chevys to the levee and sit and wait (complete with taco vendors)for their chance to run north and grab a piece of the American Pie...most are going east towards Arizona now because of a "triple fence" but some still try their chances here...

Street lights and traffic signals went out, building lights are out - it does appear that some street lights are coming back on but still no traffic lights. Not sure how long this cam is going to be working.

I keep readubg about these traffic problems. I understand that initially, it's necessary to stay on the main freeway to get out of town, but what I don't understand is why some people don't get off and use state highways to circumvent the slow moving traffic.

If you have an understanding of this situation, I'd appreciate your take on it, before the traffic on this thread heats up.
