As it unfortunately still does. How on earth do you start to separate corruption from Louisiana politics? My guess is when enough people wake up and vote all crooks out of office. A "good guy" here or there is only scratching the surface.
So can you tell if this event is worth covering or is it a lot of hype? I have no way to gauge. Do we just have to wait to see the aftermath? The media is getting on my nerves. Will this be a test to see if we've more or less 'beaten' hurricanes in terms of modern building and survivability?
As far as the land masses...all that stuff on the map below New Orleans isn't really land--it's swamp.

This buoy has stopped reporting wave height. Last report that it did have that was just under 40 foot waves.
This buoy is in deep water.
Weather Channel has storm surge figures, and I hope they are wrong. I have seen those levees -- but they are saying 20 to 25 feet for the storm surge.
Storm seems to be heading a little to the East of New Orleans. But it may not be far enough East.

I'm sure there was a post about Nagin supporting Bush (true or not). Maybe THAT poster was mistaken. Where on earth that post is now, I have no idea. Thanks for starting all of these threads. They are a great resource!
