Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

CAT 4... This one is bigger than Camile, so it won't slow down very fast.

...the DUmmies were blaming the Louisiana National Guard for taking "all of the equipment" to Iraq.

Those people at DU shouldn't be let loose on the streets. I don't even lurk there anymore, too infuriating!

I've talked to him several times in person when he worked atop Jackie Gaughn's Union Plaza (AM-720). Art's show was political back then.

Well, you'd think after telling people during Ivan to crawl in their attics... with an ax (to hack their way out if it didn't work)... you'd just think they would have thought this over.

I had forgotten that. OMG, this guy is a laugh a storm, isn't he?

Jeff, your credibility is zero, little one--be gone--poof!

Whatever. I should have learned from the Holloway threads that these live threads are just populated with the reactionary members of FR.

Thank God that there are actually threads that attract non-alarmist posters that don't have a unbearable need to blame someone.

Geesh, a category 4 storm is about to hit New Orleans and most of you can't get past the fact that the mayor wasn't a master orator.

Hell, many of the evacuation plans you people have suggested would just as likely moved the refugees into the path of the storm and actually more vulnerable than if they had stayed put. In this case New Orleans my be a death trap, but the storm could just as likely taken a different track if evacuation had been ordered 48 hours ago.

I'm out...

Yeah but the coffee machine is controlled by the 'puter and has a low-level pot sensor with auto fill and brew.

Right?

Even with the warmest waters in front of it?

Hmm.. Well, I don't know what the temperature differences are, but if the water ahead is about 3-5 degrees warmer than the water behind then Katrina may very well strengthen despite the shallow depths. Basically, as I understand it, the water has to be warmer enough to make up for the decreased depth. It's the total heat that matters. Vertical shear matters too, but from what I've heard there isn't any to speak of anyhow.

Howlin, I just don't see how some folks would be able to load up three days worth of food at the last minute. Some people might not have as much as 3 days worth of food at hand and going to the grocery store at such a late date would prove pointless.
I really wonder what kind of food people will bring: canned goods? pasta? Thousands of people using sterno cans to cook food?
I don't know but it just sounds like a situation which could deteriorate. Another FReeper mentioned there will be MREs for the people. Without that I think you would have serious problems.
