Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

Well, I was not much protected to speak of and was hardly in a debris free area (though nothing big hit me, needless to mention). It was during Hurricane Hugo. I was also outside in Hurricane Fran but the winds were much lower - in the 60s mph. Both occasions were due to ignorance on my part (I managed not to know that hurricanes were on the way).

weren't Florida animals locked in caged areas? The birds trapped in by the nets were the only ones really killed. Think it's different? I dunno.

You know, NO zoo was always a favorite for my family. Because it typically rains every afternoon in NO, we'd wait for the rain to go see the animals. Most people would clear out. We went with umberellas. The animals would run out and frollic in the rain. It was just great!!!

No it just bothers me when people that are supposed to conservatives become reactionary and alarmists. For some reason there is this extreme need to blame somebody for this. I never understood why liberals always have to find someone to blame when something bad happens but now I'm starting to realize that it's not just a liberal reaction.

I don't know anything about this mayor - he could be a flaming socialist for I know and being the mayor of a major city, he probably is. He also might be a complete idiot as well. As someone who suffered from a speech impediment in my youth, it take offense to those who judge intelligence by how smooth a person talks.

What you are requiring of the man, however, is totally unrealistic and unreasonable. If you just want to find a way to blame someone to make yourself feel better then knock yourself out. The religious nuts found a way to do that earlier by blaming the citizens of the city. You were stand up in that situation btw.

Evacuations of 100,000 people who are not organized is just not that simple.

Also please keep in mind that first reports are often wrong.

There's enough to worry about here without starting or propagating any false panic. Attribute claims and try not to interpolate or extrapolate without hard data.

That was a typo about Hurricane Fran, the winds were in the 50s where I was at - probably low 50s.

Looking at the NWS radar from Mobile, I'm noticing the eye is still moving slightly westward, not due north. That might be bad news for NO - better news for the Missisippi coast.
