Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

"Windmill power = K*airdensity*rotorarea*velocity^3."

Your equation for wind power is P = K*m*v2/t

Your scaling of 1/vol * area allows you to write v3.

Odd jump on the satellite animation. She seemed to leap northward in the last frame. I am trying to see if it skipped one.

You're drowning in desperation. Their basketball coliseum likely holds at least 10,000 just in the seats, plus more on the floor. Plenty more fit in the athletic dept gyms. More in the student rec facilities, which if it is like most universities has several indoor raquetball courts, gyms, a track, and weight room. That's easily 20-25,000 before starting in with university's numerous classrooms. And of course you forgot my suggestion of using local schools and govt bldgs, of which only a fraction are used for local evacuees. Nor did you remember that LSU could be used as a staging area to transport overflow to other areas of the state(using buses and trains in the 2nd 24 hours.)

How about military bases?

Great, *if* this was already in an existing evac plan.

A little hard to pull off.....overnight, I'm sure.

Are these Fox News cams on fix going to stay up even when the atmosphere gets too thick for normal satellite? I was wondering when someone would get the technology perfected to be able to bear witness to the storm. You can get 5mp shots from the surface of Mars but when you want storm coverage it's zip until it's over.

/Praying for NO to pull through
