Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

Yes. I saw an interview with a state official and he gave this number and a web address out for the L.A. AG. Reports include price gouging for hotel rooms, refusing to take anything but cash for gas, gas price gouging, and so forth. He is promising prosecutions. The uninvestigated reports extend up to Lafayette.

I cant imagine how they survived. They would have had to had left during the worst of it. Amazing only 8 died. Where the heck does one go to hide during the worst of a hurricane?
Surprised Hollywood hasn't made a movie out of the legend.

And if you have a plan in advance -- i.e., more than 12 hours before the storm hits, there are a million military bases around there, for starters.

Exactly. This was known to be heading to NO Friday night (even before, really); if they had immediately put out the call to cities even hours away to send buses...they would have! They could have been there early Saturday morning to start hauling people out.

As far as where would they go? Elementary schools, high schools, YMCA's, churches...the list is endlist. Churches, in particular would have gladly embraced the refugees...we wouldn't have had to worry about food, medical care, or anything with churches involved.

I am guessing letting that crowd in Sams Club would be a bad decision.

Better than the Super Wal-Mart...no gun counter/ammunition in the Sam's Club...at least not in the ones by me...

And just think...all those supplies right within easy reach. Would have to add a couple of port-a-potties out back though...

There was a plan in place. Geesh. There have been plans in place for years now. FEMA made this a priority. There was poor leadership on the part of the mayor and his "men"

Well, that's what I thought. Hurricanes are a reality in those parts. The mayor should have been more decisive earlier on.

Jeff--are you always this contrary, or are you just working overtime tonight? When the mayor finally got around to suggesting people should take this storm seriously, he recommended taking the train out of town--to anywhere.
