Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

100 mph winds won't kill you unless they drop a tree or a VW Bug on your head.

Odds are there will be debris flying around in 100 mph winds.

in 18 hours in an EMERGENCY situation.

As already discussed ad nauseum on these threads, ALL of the plans for New Orleans call for 72 hours to evacuate. They have for YEARS.

This guy had from Friday afternoon to DO SOMETHING......and he didn't........he waited till Bush called him and told him to order an evacuation.

I am guessing letting that crowd in Sams Club would be a bad decision.

I feel like I'm on a death watch.

Because you, and many others, are.

Death and destruction. I pray that the storm just, out of the clear blue, vanishes. Failing that, that all the affected people find their way to safety.

"However, the cause of the green tint has not been proven conclusively. Doesn't hydrogen glow green when it ionizes? "

I believe that the green of some lightning strikes comes from the copper in transformers vaporizing. However, I have seen red lightning also, don't know where that comes from.

This is the first I've heard about wild animals running loose. Hmm, I wonder who is honored with the cleanup task.

I don't think that's the ENTIRE story.

You're right. The entire story is that folks on the Sanibel Causeway were prevented from returning to their homes despite reports of looters gaining access to the island by boat and stripping their homes. That won't happen again.

This year LE has made residents obtain mirror tags that clearly identify them as residents and furthermore most of us on the barrier islands know who the scumbags are/were that pilfered the houses on the islands.

It won't go down the same way again. Trust me.

Well, yes, that's most certainly true, but I've been outside in approximately 90-100mph winds and I'm still here.

There was no party. Only 23 people stayed at the apartments, eight died. The legend of the party is based on the story of one survivor and is vehemently denied by the others.

Sure they can. Coliseum, athletic dept gyms, student recreational facilities, classrooms with chairs pushed into the corner.

You're going to house 50,000 to 100,000 people at LSU by stacking them up in classrooms with chairs pushed in the corners?

Is it too soon to start praying for everybody in the path of this monster? I went through Agnes back in '72- that did a lot of damage all the way through upstate NY and Western PA- valleys filled up like bathtubs.
One hamlet along the Genesee River, Mudville, which was still recovering from the '67 flood, was literally wiped off the map- several people died. Multiply this by the entire Missippi and Ohio river valleys and we're talking biblical destruction.

And you will never get a realistic answer to that question.

If you guys had some facts, this discussion wouldn't be so repetitive.

They DID bus some of the people at the Super Dome to Baton Rouge.

And if you have a plan in advance -- i.e., more than 12 hours before the storm hits, there are a million military bases around there, for starters.

Remember how few animals were harmed during the tsunami? There was no warning. Let's hope for the best.

Well, I don't think those animals were locked in a cage that's soon going to be several feet under water! As bad as things are, I don't think it would be a good idea to let the African lions roam the deserted streets of NO...then live thru it....talk about HUNGRY!

Ya' know what I've been wondering about all day? The sharks that have been biting and attacking people. With the water rising, etc., you know they are really gonna be in a "mood"... wonder what they are gonna do. :0

Don't worry, the gator's will eat them before they can cause any trouble... ;^)
