Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

Amazing -- I would have been out of there long before today.
Thanks. It already looks too rough for me.
That question will be not be meaningful if a disater befalls the SuperDome.
I agree with you on the Red Cross disaster teams.
At 50 people per busload, we are talking 2,000 busloads in 1080 minutes. If 20 sites for boarding were established throughout the parish, this would be an average of 100 busloads per site over the course of 1080 minutes, or about 1 busload every ten minutes for the entire period of time. With lots of training and lots of practice and perfect execution, this might be possible. In reality, I agree that such a rate cannot reasonably be expected to be attained, without proper education of the public in advance as to what they would need to do, coupled with adequate equipment and flawless logistics.
I don't think this is an accurate statement.
Doesn't hydrogen glow green when it ionizes?
Radio station 870 has been not coming in here for several minutes. That can be atmosphere conditions sometimes. Anyone now hearing WWL radio?
Winds gusting to 90 in New Orleans over the past 30 minutes. Strong squalls sweeping through the city.
They had to keep some roads with inbound lanes, for people from out of state rushing in to evac their elderly parents, etc.
Dang! And the main part of the hurricane is not scheduled to hit for another seven hours. Cannot fathom the devastation this is going to cause.

I've got WWL streaming
Amen.
any news on the latest pressure and winds.....it may be 150 or so instead of 160 if the storm is actually starting to weaken, but I am betting it still is close to 160.
Dear God, please let the levees hold...
If the levees do hold, all will know that it was the Hand of God that held them!
Got me, but someone on this expert-laden thread should know.
