Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

When you say 8000 died in Galveston, I wonder what did that means in percetage of people there. You have to worry not how many die but the percentage that die. Given the same conditions, that is what you have to prepare yourself for.

Slightly better perspective....

needs to go almost due north the way I see it, and it had been going NW....

it would have to go far to the west. a move to the west may avoid the lake being puhsed out into the city, but being in the eastern eye wall means the wind damage will be most intense, and the storm surge from the sea will be no picnic.

We met Miami/Dade codes when we put an addition on. We have one area where our roof overhangs our deck. The number of hurricane straps required by code was phenomenal.
I asked the inspector why the requirements were so stringent and he said "Uplift."

IMHO Laurie Dhue isn't very good. I'm a red-blooded male, but an anchor job may not be the best fit for her skills set.

For what it's worth, I just talked to my brother-in-law, a structural engineer.

I asked him about the Superdome. He says all bets are off above 175MPH, without exact blueprints and technical data. Maybe it won't get that strong. Here's hoping, prayers up.

"When you say 8000 died in Galveston, I wonder what did that means in percetage of people there."

It was a high percentage. Many actually went down to the shore to watch and drowned, which is unthinkable now, but then, they didn't have weather forecasts as such, let alone radar and satellite.
