Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

It is a city known for Voodoo, partying in the French Quarter/Bourbon Street (and Fat City), as well as strip joints...

So we should expect this hurricane to head straight for Vegas next then?

Update on WDSU:

The station staff has bailed out of New Orleans, and is headed for temp facilities in Jackson, MS; their sister station in Orlando (WESH-TV) is running the show until they can set up shop in Jackson (however long that takes).

The updated feed is at: http://mfile.akamai.com/12912/live/reflector:38843.asx. I'm guessing that the signal may go back to the other one once they get up and running Jackson, but as you know, nothing is definite in this kind of situation.

First you would have to stage the aircraft and move the people to the airfield. It would have been faster to move them out on trains to include freight trains.

That's not true if NO gets the storm surge....NO may not get the storm surge...just depends on where Katrina hits.

Not the whole metro area, but a big portion; but that would require a perfect shot and you'd still have massive flooding.

Maybe when they shut the oil platform in, they also cut power to the buoy -- don't know.

I asked my husband about this, he said NO!!!! He said what he is hearing is the instrumentation on the platforms are being torn off. If it is being torn of the platforms it may very well be torn off the buoys. Not sure how they are held intact... some are internal. Waves have been recorded 18 to upwards to 32 feet!
