Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.
Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

Wow, even the NWS forecasters are getting emotional in their updates. Not a good sign.
Plane is in the storm currently. Should be getting data very soon.
At least those 20,000 in the Superdome can move up to the 2nd and 3rd decks if need be. (providing there is still a roof there)
I'm still laughing..
A date with Destiny....wow.
Whether the lights and cameras go out or the containers fly first?
Janice Dean is completely freaking out!
Actually...storm surge will wipe out the bottom of buildings and they'll come down. Apts aren't built to withstand...storm surge...suggestion read up on storm surge...if you looked at Camille link one in particular was an apt complex...storm surge took it down...
Thank you, Strategerist. I just got back to the computer. I appreciate your very clear warning.
what kind of structure is she in? concrete, wood frame?
That photo is heart wrenching! We just returned from Shreveport. When we checked into the hotel at 1030 PM on Friday night we got the last available room! (The last we had heard when we left Houston was the hurricane was headed for the Fl. panhandle. We were stunned.) By the time we left Shreveport today, people were coming in droves. I wish people understood how important it is to leave ahead of the evacuation orders. You can always turn around and come back home.
Maybe she's mentally comparing this to the Black Sea flood of ~7,500 BC (the Black Sea was originally a freshwater lake). The sea is still there.
I am sorry to believe this...but I anticipate a type of rioting within the dome.
Dear God, I hope I'm just being a negative wench!!!!
I haven't done that since Nov of 2000.
LOL! I have refused a media interview before, but it didn't occur to me at the time to do so like that!
Next time, I'll be better prepared. :-)
What are they going to do, make them go outside if caught smoking? Like prisons, they will smuggle in just about whatever they want.
Nope.
I don't really blame the NO mayor for losing it.
Whether or not he screwed the pooch by not ordering the evac (I think he did but time will judge him), I can't imagine being very calm myself in his situation although I would like to think that I would be, I can't say for sure.
"If you watched the foks coming into the superdome, many many smokers, something tells me this is an ordinance that may just be bent a little bit tonight."
Can's of Skoal will be going for $25 in there if they have to stay put for a few days.
