Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

When buildings are destroyed, their above ground natural gas connections and piping will be torn open. Sparks from downed electrical wires and other sources will ignite the gas creating a firestorm as one building after another are engulfed in flames.

I didn't understand why Shep was talking about fires and being prepared for a fire.

He was discussing what the local Emergency Management people were talking about for htose who are staying to have in their preparedness plans.

That made me laugh. He asked the reporter if he could hang with him in a suite. Glad they have a sense of humor still.

That Superdome freaks me out. I would NEVER go in there! She and Shep are good friends, aren't they? At least they seem to be when they're both on. I can't imagine what the reporters were thinking, going in there.

You know Uma Pemmaraju is also from here...I wasn't surprised when she went national...she is good.

I certainly would not want to be in that superdome tonight and risk diying among strangers. I'd rather be under a bridge.

..?????

Personally I wanna go like my grandfather...peaceful like in his sleep...not like the people screaming in the back seat of his car...*SMILES*

Could you imagine being stuck on the Lake Pontratrain Causeway with darkness, waves starting to crash over, and winds starting to howl?

Maestri: pray for a slight move east; we will take a lick; good news is people left;we will be ready to recover;trying to help those who stayed by opening some last chance shelters; all our people left; fast approaching too late to leave--last hour or so; about 8 PM will start experiencing tropical storm strength wind;about 10% in Jefferson parish stayed ; not happy with that;some just thought they knew better; some residents of GRAND ISLE stayed--very very sad situation;potential for areas to be uninhabitable for weeks; worst case thousands die, city under water for months-with toxic water---but this is worst case, but this is a worst case storm--anything is possible;we will soon stop responding and will have to wait; "Pray. Pray Hard!"

Isn't Williams the anchor for NBC? I dont watch it. What is someone like him doing there.

I wonder if they are trying to win awards for their coverage.

I went thru the Pennsylvania flood of 1972. An entire city block in Harrisburg was consumed by flames because the fire engines could not drive through the flooded streets to put it out!

I know it seems ironic, but bad fires always seem to follow floods in cities.

I don't mind saying it scared the living hell out of me.

Francis sat 15 miles offshore and battered the living daylights out of us all day, until all the electric infrastructure was destroyed, then moved onshore at night.

I live about 10 miles from the shoreline.
The surge breached the barrier islands and wiped out Indian River drive for a long stretch.

Sitting in a totally black, boarded up house while the storm raged outside was no fun.

I built the house myself, and it came through fine, although it shook like hades.

My business was not so fortunate.
