Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

Louisiana governor just held a press conference on CNN now. Says she is pleased with evacuation thus far. They didn't order a mandatory evacuation until 9:30am CDT, less than twelve hours ago. Traffic jams coming out of New Orleans are massive. Highway cameras showing too many unused lanes.

If I were stuck in traffic in one of those cars, stuck in traffic on a bridge over open water, I'd be panicking.

Matthews said....twice....that he was there in the Super Dome, to watch President Bush's father accept the republican nomination. It was completely unnecessary the first time, and when he said it the second time, I got the distinct feeling he was trying to associate the name "Bush" to the Dome. Landrieu at one point, said, "I know you've been there many times". (No he hasn't...he said he'd been there twice.).She praised the Governor and the mayor. She said the Dome would hold. She praised the evacuation because she had evacuated to Baton Rouge this morning. She said she had just seen the Governor, so the governor must be in Baton Rouge too.

I laughed this afternoon watching the Mayor sitting in a local NBC affilifate newsroom describing what he was doing. He said, he had talked to the president, to FEMA, the Governor, and listed quite a few others he had talked to on the phone. That's what he's been doing.....talking on the phone.
