Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

Pardon the crassness, but the only evacuation this mayor is familiar with is probably the one that created the big brown spot in his pants...

They have time estimates for how long it will take for X amount of cars to get to safety. Someone posted that being stuck in a car will be deadly when this starts and the winds are already picking up.

KATRINA HAS STRENGTHENED RAPIDLY OVERNIGHT INTO A CATEGORY 5 HURRICANE OVER THE VERY WARM AND DEEP LOOP CURRENT OF THE GULF OF MEXICO. THE HURRICANE HAS AN ANNULAR APPEARANCE ON SATELLITE WITH A WELL-DEFINED EYE AND SYMMETRIC OUTFLOW PATTERN... REFLECTIVE OF NEAR ZERO SHEAR.

Tell us northerners what Contraflow is please. I assume it's traffic directed to go in only one direction, in this case OUT of NO. Is that correct?

There you go again, comparing the energy of 10 to 15 atomic bombs to a tiny sonic boom. Next thing you'll be comparing the weight of a sonic boom to millions of pounds of flood water.

Maybe I am not getting through.

I only compared external forces "shaking" the earth, such as hurricanes, sonic booms, explosions etc. I never compared the magnitude of a hurricane to sonic boom. Only that both shake the earth in the area.

You are the one that implied and suggested that hurricanes can trigger earthquakes. To be clear, I completely disagree with that, and I am confident that most credible seismologist would agree with me, not you.

These people have made some terrible decisions.

I'm sickened by the situation they've created.

Is this why they're called...THE BIG EASY...?

This webcam in downtown NO shows people still walking around.

Please tell me that's not live. That's just ridiculous.

Thank you for that beautiful prayer. Does the prayer have to be said three times or the last line. Not sure.

Interesting Fox is advertising 50 Most Beloved Hymns.

I suspect lots of people will be turning to them in the next few hours and days.

Thanks for the update and links. I've been away for a couple days and missed the earlier ones. My prayers and thoughts are with everyone in the storms path. God Bless and keep you and God speed in getting out of the area. When I first heard about it last week, Katrina was an uneventful tropical depression in the Atlantic. This seems to be a once-in-a-lifetime kind of hurricane forming.
