Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

The way those walls curve, I could see them catching the wind and just lifting the roof off.

JOe is HOPING that is what will happen because he posted a Biloxi Landfall at CAT 5 3 days ago.

Of course I predicted a Biloxi-Mobile landfall 6 hrs ago LOL, so I guess I am with Joe on this one.

Just East of NO would spare them the brunt of the devastating winds, But as the storm approaches the northern edge will push water up the missippi and also into Lake P, and NO will still become a huge Bathtub full of water.

I can't even imagine what that wind is going to sound like from within the dome during the storm.

Is the dome on higher ground?

Yes, I know it has levels up high, but I'm asking is it located on higher ground? Realizing, of course, in NO, higher ground is relative.

If I were in NO, I'd have been at least 200 miles north by now, regardless of what Bastardi is saying.

Well, I don't know what has happened in Louisiana, but it was much better in the sixties.

My mother was a state public health nurse and therefore responded to civil emergencies. Her job was to command and coordinate an emergency center in Lafayette, usually a school.

How well I remember the huge guard trucks coming to pick us up at home to transport us through the flooded streets. In those days, the folks in the low lying areas, such as around New Orleans, were actually transported north on freight trains to depots where they were picked up by the guard.

The guard also transported in food, water, supplies and medicine to the school. My mother was in charge, but she had guard back-up and a ham radio operator. It was very organized and ran smoothly.

Oh, by the way, the Red Cross always showed up the next day or so for photo ops.

detonating a low yield tactical nuk>>

Nope - would not make a dent.>>>

If anything it has the potential of strengthening the hurricane, not weakening it.

Does anybody know what wind speed the dome can withstand? I hope one of those high rises doesn't fall on it.

This would be a very bad time for a terror strike of any kind. Especially in the fully packed superdome. I wonder how they are screening those trying to enter with suitcases of stuff?

That's a great idea for everyday. We have 3 vehicles, and Mr.FF is compulsive about keeping the gas tanks as close to full as possible at all times. Especially in winter! When the gauge gets down to 1/2 tank he heads to fill it. If my car gets to 1/4 tank I hear about it!

Unless it turns north, it looks from the radar loop
that it will pass west of NO. just my guess.
