Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

If anyone has contacts at Fox, can you ask them to please get some new video besides the one with the shaking dog and the guy putting up plywood bending over to showcase his buttcrack?

LOL. Dontcha just hate it when they show the same clip over and over? Especially when it's some unflattering buttcrack shot.

I was about to post the same thing.
I have a heartsick feeling like I did watching the twin towers.
Do they know how bad it is going to get? Do they have a clue?

The damage of calling 'foul' so many times is that when one like this happends people don't heed the warnings until it is too late.

All of us who live in evacuation zones know that if you wait until you know it's coming to call for an evacuation, it's too late to get everyone out.

One of those situations where it's better to be safe than sorry....evacuation is a pain in the rear, but I'm always glad to have something to come home to.

Saw that too on TWC.

hard to say what to make of it. this storm is so huge - I'm not sure we can make anything out the fact that the wind has decreased slightly.

Steve Forbes (on TWC) said that trough to the west may be causing the slight diminishing of winds.

From what I understand, the tides don't really matter in the Gulf.

FoxNews - the outer bands have reached New Orleans.

I am glad Shep is explaining why those folks are still there. Imagine being from another country and stuck? This may be very tragic.

To: who knows what evil?

The discussion points out the wind speeds were adjusted downward due to another instrument showing that the normal flight-level-to-surface reduction is not as accurate in this case. Thus, it's more of a refinement of the likely maximum sustained surface winds, and not a true weakening. The pressure is actually lower than it was earlier today, at 902 mb. Not out of the question that the winds could increase even more, but at this point it's academic
