Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

Yep. They kept the WWI vets working on the Keys bridges there way too long, and then sent out the train to rescue them right as it hit.

Just adding more to the overall potential catastrophie. First in human lives, then in property and economy. We could be in for a hard winter in more ways than one.

Prayers to God in Heaven that in HIs will this thing will turn to the one side or the other...and if not, that we will have the strength and commitment to get through it, helping one another, particularly those worst impacted by it.

I believe we will, we always have in this nation, whether for our own or others on foreign shores.

I will pray for her.

My son (WI National Guard) is hunkering down at Camp Shelby, south of Hattiesburg, MS. They've been told to expect mobilization to aid civilians. He's a medic so he may be quite busy for a few days.

Well, 9 times out of 10, it is media hype.

I agree with you that the media sensationalize hurricanes for ratings. However, that 1 time out of 10 can be devastating. Considering the intensity of this storm and the placement and elevation of New Orleans, I'd have been gone long ago.

" Yes, that would be catastrophic. The Superdome is certified up to 200 MPH winds but wind gusts over 207 mph are predicted so the dome may drop."

I have read numerous posters refer to wind speeds at which structural damage occurs. Some posters have referred to flying debris. No one I have read has referred to what the inevitable water [rain!] associated with these storms does to the equation. Effectively increasing the density of the atmosphere and the force and therefore the potential for damage has to go up proportionally doesn't it?

Please pray for my wife, she's at Keessler AFB in Biloxi Miss. and she is hunkering down at the hospital. I'm at Charleston AFB and cannot be with her.

Pray for all of you and yours to be safe through all of this.

Shep Smith: Residents here are treating this storm as nothing but media hype.

This isn't the first time that the media has cried wolf. Unfortunately, this time, there is a wolf.
