This is the right move...

Mayor Nagin just issued the order. Also, officials now have the right to commandeer buildings, vehicles, etc, deemed 'needed' to help in this evac.

Yesterday, staying near Broad and Napoleon, the lowest part of the city. I got out there as fast as I could and headed back to Texas.
It is going to be a rough time in SE Louisiana.
Pray.

I most of my friends and family left yesterday and did not need the mayor's order to leave. All highway lanes are now heading our of the city.
This is the biggest Threat since Betsy in 1965.
I hope that Levee Holds.

I heard that a large part of the population has no form of private transportation. How about the poor residents of the bayou. This hurricane could be the worst disaster to hit the U.S.

The levee could still hold and still be screwed. There's only so much height it can cover.

Interesting how they encourage people to be reliant on public transport.

Do you have a good site to watch?
Weather.com is crap to begin with and overloaded.
My wife and kid are supposed to drive from RI to Fl tuesday.
Thanks.

Prayers for our friends in NO.
Attention Lower Mississippi FReepers.
We all know that FReepers are the smartest bunch around. There's no way a FReeper is stupid enough to stay in the direct path of this monster. It is quickly approaching Camille levels. You guys in the path need to get out now.

This hurricane could potentially destroy the City of New Orleans. This would be like an F3/F4 tornado hitting the entire city. There won't be anything left of that city. Loss of life could be in the thousands...damage will be in the tens of billions of dollars.
Everyone better pray this thing weakens.
