Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

Frail, elderly and sick residents unable to get out were moved to the 72,000-seat Louisiana Superdome, where 200 cots in upper-deck concourses supplanted the dome's usual tenant, the New Orleans Saints.
LuLinda Williams wept after dropping off her bedridden grandmother, who is on oxygen, at the Superdome. Only one family member was allowed to stay with each patient, so Williams left her daughter.
"I thought they'd let the family stay with them," Williams said. "Where are the rest of us supposed to go now? How are we supposed to know she's OK?"
Nagin later said the dome would also be opened as a one-night last resort for able-bodied storm refugees. The last time that happened during Hurricane Georges in 1998, the 14,000 refugees nearly did more damage than the storm itself.
Countless televisions, seat cushions and bar stools were stolen, and workers spent months cleaning graffiti off the walls.

No problem... I just stumbled across it myself last night on Thread III.
My first point was that Katrina is causing the earth to shake right now.
As for the secondary point, actually nobody knows what can trigger large earthquakes. But it's theorized that other remote earth tremors and maybe lots of water over a fault can. So it's quite a longshot, but a huge hurricane shaking the earth and dumping a million tons of water on a fault that's ready to pop can't be ruled out as a zero probability.
Good. I'd bet this ends up landing somewhere between Bay St. Louis and Pascagoula, which means Mobile would get hit hard, even if it goes down to a Cat 4 (which may be the most likely outcome, from what I've read it is very hard for a Cat 5 to maintain that strength for a long time and to landfall, for a variety of reasons.)
Thanks you.... Don't forget to send them the pic in post #1975 asking why in the hell they haven't closed all incoming traffic lanes to No and made them EXIT ONLY! Also ask whether or not they're using all the school buses to help evacuate people. Since besides saving lives, it'll be fewer vehicles to replace later....

"Hurricanes can easily be recorded by seismographs, and before the days of satellite images, seismographs were sometimes used to track the storms. Ocean waves generated by the hurricane cause the most shaking, but shaking trees and buildings also contribute to the seismic waves.

I'm hearing the same things from friends and family from Lafayette to Houma to New Orleans. They are not leaving because "it will turn." I can only pray about this here in Colorado. If I were still down there I would have gotten my family out.
He w/b talking about both the hurricane and the Iraq constitution.
Per Fox, Coast Guard closed New Orleans port at noon today.
Of course he should have to order the evac. The whole thing is his fault! Global warming, you know. Maybe the UN can draw up a proposal to prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future?

This freeper wishes all well in harms way of Katrina.I went through THREE hurricanes in Daytona Beach (living about 1000ft from the ocean) last year.Still don't have a roofing company to re-do my roof that I had to fix and patch three times myself after riding each one out in the house.
FR was my only connection to the outside world on my wife's battery powered laptop with her Sprint wireless PCMCIA card. Nauti Nurse and a few other freepers helped me get thru a couple of very difficult times by replying to my frantic posts as my house was literally BREATHING (Walls, windows, and ceiling were pulsing like when a person breathes in and out) as one of the storms approached, went over and passed.
Bannie's post reminded me of a reporter's comment on TV within the last 12 hours or so. Someone said that they HAVE to ride the storm out in NO, and that they would do it on the second level and attic(if needed because of flooding).
The reporter's comment was "Be sure and Take an AXE with you !! If you get stuck on a second level or attic and the water gets to a higher level than that, you can try to make an exit hole to get on the roof with the axe."
He then went on to say there have been deaths concerning people getting in a no-way-out situation like that !!

Also, he has the moral authority, indeed the moral duty, to order an evacuation.
His priorities are not in order.
It's not going to turn. It's been right on the NHC track since it came back into the Gulf.
