NOAA - NHC ^ | 27 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/27/2005 8:05:55 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

That's not too far-fetched. I just saw something about hurricanes creating earth tremors on their own.
*****

Do you remember where you read it at? I have looked and looked and can not find a thing, to back up what I am feeling. I emailed a friend in June that I felt like a huge hurricane would hit in the gulf at the base of the faultline and trigger something even worse. But can not reason in my own mind how a hurricane could move or shift land or if it does.

Yeah, imagine watching a N.O. Saints game and having an F3 tornado right outside the stadium for an entire half of the game.

I think all the reporters are going to be there, so we'll find out what happens

What is the latest word about Pres. Bush making a statement about Iraq, not about Hurricane Katrina?

"And Jeb has to be going nuts watching the NO officials handle the situation."

Can you imagine what he's thinking/feeling having to watch this and the train-wrecks aka Nagin and Blanco? Hopefully, he's giving Pres. Bush some wise advice right now on how to go around these idiots (and save lives)!

Either way, NO is going to be completely underwater in about 48 hours.

NN, you are doing a great job, and thanks to all that are contributing information.

President should be up soon.

The Mayor of NO wasn't very forceful, IMHO. When he says things like "for those who CHOOSE TO STAY"..I cringe.

I don't know how many thousands of residents and homeless will decide to "ride it out", but you can bank on it!

We put on an addition a couple years ago, and we had to bring the entire house up to Miami/Dade code (we're in Pinellas and that's the building code our county has adopted.) Everything from windows to doors, hurricane straps for the roof, etc. is rated for a Cat 4, but like I said, whether it will work or not hasn't been proven.

It is double jeopardy. If the eye passes over or too close to the west, they get the worst effect of the winds and storm surge. However there are lots of levees on the south side to mitigate some of that. But if it passes too close to the east (say within 20-50 miles), because of the counterclockwise flow of the winds and the geography, much of the storm surge will be pushed north and then west into Lake Pontchartrain, and then as the storm passes the winds will push that water south against the city, with the fear being that it could overtop the levees and cause the catastrophic flooding of the bowl the city sits in.

There's a "slosh-effect" too. Regardless of the direction the storm comes in, the water in the lake will be pushed one way and then slosh back contra-coup style when the storm passes. Unfortunately, the storm will work with the natural tendency of the Miss. River to change course, as well. It's been held back by the levees for about 300 years and if/when the big one hits just right, the Miss River may very well assume whatever course it was meant to be on by now. Whether there is great loss of life or not, the financial devastation of losing the Port of New Orleans indefinitely would be incredible.

the only buses the mayor mentioned - are taking people to the superdome.

Why aren't they using all of the school's buses to evacuate people AND save the buses in the process? Guess that makes too much sense...
