Live Thread - Hurricane Katrina, Part IV (Update: Now a Category 5 )
NOAA - NHC ^ | 27 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/27/2005 8:05:55 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

Yes, the NE quadrant is always the worst because that's where the winds are heading the direction of land, pushing a wall of water (surge).

But, the size of this thing in area and strength, I don't think N.O. is very safe either way.

You have no idea whether or not that is true. Look, it is now quite evident how serious this situation is, and has been made numerous times on the thread, about every other post. Perhaps it would be wise to calm down just a bit, posting hysterical speculation really is counterproductive now.

I'm following this thing totally afraid to post because I can't think of a single hopeful of positive thing to say. So much of Louisanna, East Texas, etc. is low and already wet, the entire region will be badly hurt.

And then there's the 15 inches of rain...

Maybe the whiners "believe" that the--with all of the National Guard soldiers here--the soldiers could stand, shoulder to shoulder, and hold the water back.

can he do that? I guess FEMA could pay them, essentially as charter planes, to fly people out. that would be a good idea.

the turn matches with the NHC track, so while it is good in the sense that it means she likely will not go to the west of NO, it will probably still come close enough to the east to give really bad winds anyway and lots of flooding problems, though hopefully not as bad as the doomsday situation since it would be moving northeast.

There was a caller into 870 AM...her brother in law is in a nursing center behind the Jefferson Hospital(ground floor).
Only one nurse was left to take care of all the patients. This caller had 2 family members going over to help feed and care for the patients. Heartbreaking!
