Organizations like the NAACP, People for the American Way , NARAL and Black Entertainment Television claim to represent all African Americans. Jeff Johnson of BET told Family News In Focus that African Americans, such as himself, have a problem with John Roberts’ record on civil rights.
“I felt there are clear questions about Roberts’ record as it relates to documents that have been released.”
But Niger Innes of the Congress of Racial Equality says Johnson, who is part of the liberal group, People for the American Way , does not represent the “silent majority” of African Americans.
“Listen to the variety of voices within the African American community, not just the usual suspects that will try to racially demagogue against John Roberts because they have no facts on their hands, but listen to the silent majority within the African American community.
One of those voices is Project 21’s Michael Massey, who says blacks are only helped by strict interpretation of the Constitution.
“I argue that if the Court upholds the Constitution there is no way that a minority can be hurt. Minorities are hurt and diminished when they deviate from that.”
Civil rights activist Bob Woodson points out that the challenges African Americans faced in the 60’s are not the challenges of today.
“So therefore, what we need today are a different set of policies. We also need people of integrity on the bench like judge Roberts.”
These African American leaders see a new day for civil rights, starting with Roberts on the Supreme Court.

Unfortunately, both Niger and his dad Roy have almost no street cred. CORE isn't even a 6th rate organization in its niche. A shame.
I didn't even know that CORE still existed.
But its still good news, considering their views in the 60s.
I am a huge fan of his dad Roy and have been for a long time. I have seen his son speak many times and he is a good, sincere, and well spoken fellow.
It's just that they have no cred, and no profile in 2005. Roy took a lot of 'Uncle Tom' heat over the years but he never let it outwardly shake him. A good man.
wasn't CORE once appropriated by or part of the "rainbow coalition" and its reputation suffered upon the separation by jaxhun and the boyzz?
I'm no expert on CORE's history, but I know it started as a sound civil rights organization in the 1940s, made a deep turn towards militancy for a while with a definite 'Black Power' tint in the latter half of the 1960s, and then turned the corner as far more moderate organization. I even think Roy Innis even backed Robert Bork, but I'm working from memory on that one.
I chuckle every time I remember Roy putting Sharpton on the floor on National TV, LOL
Yep! Al was extra-supersized back then and him flopping out of his chair and onto the floor is a great memory.
Amazing that such a short time ago, Rev Al was widely regarded as having zero credibility. He still has zero credibility, it's just that some media outlets have lost sight of that!
