US anti-war grans face no charges

Tucson's Raging Grannies have protested weekly for three years

Charges have been dropped against five elderly anti-war protesters who tried to enlist at a US military recruitment centre, a city prosecutor has said.

The women aged between 65 and 81, who belonged to an anti-war group called the "raging grannies of Tucson", had been charged with trespassing.

They entered the Arizona centre in July asking to go to Iraq instead of their children and grandchildren.

Prosecutor Laura Brynwood said the charges would have been hard to prove.

"Essentially, by the time the police arrived, 10 minutes after the initial call, they had already left and were back at their protest on the sidewalk," she was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

"Proving they did not leave after they were requested to leave would be difficult."

Continued protest

A spokeswoman for the group, which has protested at the centre once a week for three years, said they welcomed the decision.

"We were naturally quite relieved because the charges were absurd in the beginning," said 75-year-old Patricia Birnie.

She added that the group would continue to protest at the centre "until there is no longer a need to be there".

The recruitment centre called the police after the women entered the site on 13 July.

At the time, the Raging Grannies, who are associated with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, said they "read a statement, sang songs, and then we left".

Army officials said the protesters had not been serious about enlisting and were harassing recruiters.

They said those opposed to the Iraq war should contact their legislators rather than bother recruiters.

Should've called their bluff and sent them to basic.

But if they demonstrated outside an abortion clinic "until there's no need for us to be there," the MSM (Marxist-Socialist Media) would label them "anti-choice zealots."

They should have grab those grannies and put their wrinkled asses on a plane for Baghdad that day. They would make good cannon fodder.

Here's their website (http://www.wilpf.org), and here's an idea of what they're all about. BARF! But they list their phone numbers ;-)

WILPF's Middle East campaign will examine the role of U.S. policy in the dynamics of current conflicts. It will educate communities to policy dimensions seldom discussed regarding Palestine, Israel, Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. What economic interests underlie the power struggles in the region? What U.S. policy changes will end violence and promote justice? The campaign will work to bridge gaps, engage diverse groups in developing a women's vision for U.S. foreign policy, and join with women in the region to claim U.N. Security Council Resolution 1325's promise that women's active participation can bring peaceful, democratic resolution to the conflicts.

June 24, 2005

Dear WILPF Branches, Friends and Women Everywhere!

We are busy preparing materials for you, inviting fantastic speakers, and attending to all the details leading up to the official beginning of the "Women Challenge US Policy: Building Peace on Justice in the Middle East" campaign. All ten members of our leadership team look forward to meeting you at WILPF’s 29th Triennial Congress, the HUGE 90th birthday celebration of WILPF, at San Francisco State University August 10-14, 2005. We want to share experiences with you, learn what you are doing in your communities, and offer you assistance and support so that together we can "challenge US policy in the Middle East."

Our keynote speakers will stimulate discussion on powerful lobbies, the dual occupation of Iraq and Palestine, humanitarian activism on the ground, and the erosion of civil liberties at home for Arab Americans. Workshops will give you insight and tools for change on the subjects of myths and stereotypes, arms sales and nuclear non-proliferation treaties, the Christian right, and working for peace through coalitions.* There will be heated and heartfelt discussions as we shape the next three years of this campaign.

If you are unable to join us at Congress, we still want to hear from you. We will be contacting branches and at-large members, distributing a questionnaire, and building a national network of branch actions and outreach. WILPF women have always challenged war and injustice. This is the current situation, and we are all involved.

In peace and sisterhood,

I was thinking the same thing. Stop them dead in their tracks ... literally.

Sorry. It's not the Raging Grannies' site. It's the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom site (with whom they are affiliated). A shrivelled vestage of the Socialis International and COMINTERN. 'nuff said.

"Proving they did not leave after they were requested to leave would be difficult."

Not in this universe, it isn't.

Oh yeah...that's right. We're dealing with legal stuff. Total disconnect with reality there.

HA! Good one! :o)

Personally, I would have asked them if their grandkids had been drafted. Upon their answering "no," I'd have asked them what the hell their point was then.

Fair enough. The military has a policy of not hiring crazed old bitches wearing Minnie Pearl hats.
