Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part III
NHC-NOAA ^ | 27 August 2005 | NHC-NOAA

Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. Currently, the forecast models are converging upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. Throughout Friday, the official track forecasts moved west, as Hurricane Katrina delayed making the anticipated northwest turn.

The following links are self-updating.

Heard earlier they were discussing contraflow beginning by 4:00PM today.

I agree with Dr. Masters. Folks in NO--GO NOW...and take your relatives and friends with you!

They're planning on turning the freeways out of town into contraflows in a couple of hours from now.

That means that even city buses carrying the homeless or whomever will only get one trip.

There aren't enough buses to make much of a dent in the population that can't get out by themselves.

Joe Bastardi says that about every Gulf hurricane. If this one hits NO he will have gotten lucky, not accurate.

I confess d/n spend a lot of time on that website but was unable to find a copy of that evac. plan/map. If it was there it was not immediately obvious. Would it not be a practical thing to make this map available for printout on line as well as in these stores? The store idea is excellent but who wants to go to a store when you are trying to get out of town?

After listening to Gov. Blanco, twice today, I can understand why the state might have some difficulty in preparation for a disaster such as Katrina could be. Comments such as "this will be a positive experience for all of us" from the first presser of the day caused me to wonder if she is unaware of what may happen. "Let's all be polite" was another comment--IMO in her previous life she must have been Miss Manners!

Well according to Madame Governor...it's "somewhat likely that we may possibly consider contraflow"...

The cell phone systems in NO area must be getting tied up. Tried calling several folks on their cells and getting no rings.

Bastardi is a joke. He will always claim that he was right after the storm is over. It never really matters how many times he changed his forecast. He has a way of twisting things to make you believe his forecast was the best forecast.

Accu weather is also after the NWS. They are major backers of this bill to stop us from receiving free weather information on the internet.

AccuWx should be boycotted.

As I mentioned before, we're in Tampa Bay and in our county alone they ordered evac of 400,000 before Charley.

Our evac zone (which is the last) was not ordered out, so we were going to stay, but the first thing we did was put my parents on a plane to Atlanta to visit my sister.

They weren't in an evac area either, but we didn't want them to have to be here to deal with the aftermath of a hurricane (i.e. no power, etc.)

We didn't get hit, but like Dr. Masters said, if you evacuate and the storm misses you, you're no worse for wear My folks had a nice little vacation, and were happy to just get out of town for awhile.

That forum is sad...esp. about all the sick and elderly and those with lots of pets who are refusing to leave their homes.

Could this be an object lesson as to how Liberials handle a real crisis? Remember the Dems who said they sat in their offices, for what 45 minutes, after the planes hit the Pentagon unable to move. God help New Orleans and God help the USA.

The comments are amazing on that discussion site. I would hope there aren't many posts over the next several hours, and that folks are packing and evacuating.

You were wise to take care of your parents like that. Sometimes the elderly are too confused to make such decisions, and they need a push and a helping hand.

Too much "what is the situation" and "what should we do" going on on that discussion site.

They should have already assessed the situation and have a plan in place.

I mean, shoot, we have a tornado plan, because we have had two pass directly over our house . . . neither touched down thank goodness. But we have a shelter set up, and the kids know what to do and where to go whether they're at home or at school (there are basement shelters at both schools -- one used to be a fallout shelter LOL!)

I tried to call my friend who went down to NO from Lafayette last night (stupid) and couldn't get through. He's a diver and told me they were going back out Sunday or Monday. It made mike come out of my nose.
