Urgent Katrina Update: New NHC Forecast Direct Hit on New Orleans as a CAT 4

Therefore...the official forecast brings Katrina to 115 knots...or a category four on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. The GFDL is more aggressive and calls for 124 knots and 922 mb. The FSU superensemble is even more aggressive bringing Katrina to 131 knots.

Natural Gas and
Oil on the Gulf Coast. We may see $70 per barrel oil.
Hurricane Betsy caused a levee to break in New Orleans in the 1960s, and people who lived through that have stories to tell.
In one case, a family had to get on the roof of the house because any lower point was in water.
The people had to fight critters and creatures for the roof -- snakes and other things wanted the high ground. It was very unpleasant from what I remember of these stories.

better fill your gas tank up...lots of oil rigs in the path...oil above $70/bar on monday? not only that, but lots of refinery capacity in Southern LA and MS. This could really spike energy prices.

High enough to keep water IN as well as out. Should be close to a new moon so there well be some high tide to add to the storm surge but not as bad as a full moon. It might be enough to push it over the edge. (literally) Not smart to build BELOW sea level.

If the levees around New Orleans fail (and they came perilously close several times in the past century), then the death toll shall reach at least the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS. No, that's not hyperbole. New Orleans sits in an incredibly vulnerable environment, a giant pit ten feet below sea level home to more than one million people. Not all will leave; many cannot flee for various reasons (medically unfit, no transportation at least 30-50 miles to safety, terrible traffic congestion) and many more simply won't.
