Raising Boys Without Men: How Maverick [Lesbian] Moms Are Creating .. Exceptional Men (yikes!)
Library Journal ^ | 2 Aug 2005 | Maryse Breton

Posted on 08/25/2005 6:31:56 AM PDT by gobucks

How do sons of lesbians and single mothers develop their moral character without a father in their lives? That is the question that Drexler (psychology, Weill Medical Coll. of Cornell Univ.) tackles here, and her answer is based on extensive research: these sons develop into sensitive, caring, and communicative human beings rarely prone to aggression who are no less “all boy” than sons of traditional families. Maverick mothers, as Drexler illustrates, seek out male role models, “collect” friends to form an extended family around their sons, and often go outside their comfort zone to offer a variety of activities and enriching experiences. Arriving in the midst of the national debate on gay marriage, the book also argues that parenting is not attached to gender—a controversial point to be sure. Drexler, who was raised by a single mom and is part of a heterosexual marriage, further supports that and other findings with inspiring anecdotes and testimonies and scientific background. Yes, lesbians and single mothers can raise boys without a man in the house, and by doing so, these women are breeding a new kind of adult man sensible to family values and open to differences. Recommended for all public libraries, especially those serving a large gay community.

Peggy the Professor has written a book, Peggy who grew up without Dad. Lemme guess: Peggy has an agenda.

Peggy has written a book saying that Bottom Line: 'Dads are not necessary to raise boys to Men'. And now, 'all public libraries' are being directed to this 'editor's choice'.

Now I guess the fact that I am a Dad, who is passing along the fathering given to me by my Dad, why this must make me 'closed' to differences. Now I finally understand why I am a criminal as far as the whacko leftists like Peggy are concerned....I victimized by having a Dad in the first place. Our world is just getting flat out NUTS!!

Our boys are really being short-changed by this notion that fathers aren't really necessary. I wonder if she has any sons? Do boys who don't have fathers at home become homosexuals at a higher rate than those who do? I believe they do. Fathers are vitally important to boys, and girls for that matter.

Compared to several SCIENTIFIC studies that demonstrate the opposite. But, she has inspiring anecdotes and testimonies, and she has a scientific background so her findings must be more reliable than all those studies.

Sweet!

I've been looking for a way to pawn off my responsibilities as a father. I'm gonna get this book so I can go home and proclaim, "Honey! I'm taking the rest of our son's life off... you are on your own!" [/sarcasm]

Funny, which one is the female on that cover? I can't seem to distinguish a difference... :-/

the inner cities, with pandemic rates of "fatherlessness" are proof positive that men are needed to raise boys.

Liberals are crazy. the liberal agenda is causing the destruction of our society.

....the assumption here being that women are as a rule sensitive, caring and communicative - which is BS - and that men are as a rule aggressive, which I also reject. Talk about stereotypes, lady.

Hm. I have a very dear cousin who is raising her son alone. She does pretty well, but sometimes the impact of not having a father around makes itself known in interesting ways.

For example, her son once wet his pants because he couldn't get his belt undone, and thus couldn't pull down his pants. He had never learned to simply open his fly.... A very small thing, yes, but the little things can add up pretty quickly.

I was raised without a father. Not a day goes by that I don't think about it. I envied my friends relationships with their fathers and sometimes still do.

Hey, but what do I know?

That's because too many moms are passive-aggressive or, at the very least, don't have the inate desire to win. A mildly strong-willed child will roll all over them.

Of course, some of the single fathers I know are only vaguely aware they have children.

The feminization of America rolls on.

Sounds like an idealized description of homos if you ask me! Drop the sensitive part, please, and give the kid a football and martial arts lessons.
