hink high gas prices are bad?
Get a load of what ex-oilman and ex-Princeton professor Kenneth Deffeyes believes are following closely behind:
"War, famine, pestilence and death," he said. "We've got to get the warning out."
The threat? Peak oil.
The term refers to the time when the worldwide production of oil peaks and begins a rapid decline. From then on, this incredibly efficient fuel source, which still costs less than most bottled water, will be ever more scarce and ever more costly.
Highly respected sources, including the U.S. government, think that day is distant, and most mainstream economists think it won't cause much of a ruckus.
But Deffeyes thinks peak oil is coming in November, and could bring humankind to the brink.
"It's been like pulling teeth to get public awareness," he said.
So who is this well-credentialed Chicken Little?
Deffeyes grew up next to gushing oil wells. He is a former petroleum geologist himself, having worked for Shell Oil for six years after earning a doctorate from Princeton.
He is a devotee of former Shell geologist M. King Hubbert, who correctly predicted U.S. oil production would peak in the early 1970s. Deffeyes is also the author of "Hubbert's Peak" and "Beyond Oil: The View From Hubbert's Peak," which was published last spring.
He is among a cadre of peak-oil proponents who sketch out a frightening near-term future in which the American way of life is upended as the United States, China and great nations scramble after oil fields like desperate players in a game of musical chairs.

Not every time. But there is such a thing a context. There is no context to make one think that creation was not 6 24 hr days. The only thing that makes people want to look at it differently is "science".
There is nothing anyone can do about this mess. I don't know about you, but I'm making long term plans to retire overseas.
And yet Peter said (I'm sorry, I don't have the ch. and verse) "A thousand years is like a day to God."
If big oil was scheming in this, they'd be building more refineries and maybe doubling their profits. As far as I can tell, they're paying for the inflated crude before it gets to the pump. So how are they benefitting in all of this again?
Overseas exactly where?
And what is it about "overseas" that will magically enable them to avoid the impact of depleted oil?
Inquiring minds need to know.
Hoooeee. I won't ask where, but I assume it's somewhere warm and tropical. And friendly. PI comes to mind...
So you think it will be a serious, serious crackup.
It won't be a sharp peak nor a rapid decline. The main concern is sweet crude that is easy to produce. Other oil is not so preferred but is more common. The main effect will be an increase in the cost of oil products, which may quadruple in the following decade.
This should be a C/E thread. All threads could be C/E threads. It is only ID that makes science possible.
The low cost reserves have NOT been exhausted. Much of them have been put off limits by environmental regulation.
Oil seeps are occurring all over the place on the ocean floor.
Hmm. The 1970s was also when the EPA got teeth and started requiring massive environmental impact studies before spitting, let alone drilling for oil.
I seem to recall that nuclear power peaked during that period, too.
If oil really were as plentiful as you suggest, then go somewhere where they don't have environmental regulations. In fact, that is why oil was so cheap in the 90's. We were drilling overseas like crazy. Unfortunately, though, even those reserves are getting harder to tap.
The linkage is indirect, but present if one chooses to research it.
Numerous tax exempt foundations channel funds to the eco-rats in support of their protest and litigation efforts against drilling, refineries, nuclear plants, etc.
It serves as a price support mechanism for the Seven Sisters.
And who are these tax exempt foundations?
The biggest ones can be seen here.
Not surprisingly, the name Rockefeller appears more than once.
Geologists should be required to take courses in astrophysics. Other planetary bodies in our solar system are practically dripping in complex hydrocarbons, but the earth isn't?
Absolutely. But that is not tied to creation in the least.
ID is the new hip term. Even the president can say it on TV.
Our planet is surrounded by a breathable, life sustaining atmosphere. Other planets in our solar system aren't????
To begin with .... I'm not a drill rig worker. Secondly... how many rigs have you designed to find oil in any place besides sand? It's clear you've not spent much time talking to geologists or reserve engineers.
--it doesn't take any great "breakthrough" to get kerogen out of Colorado, Wyoming or Utah marlstone--it just isn't economical---and won't be for a long time, if ever.
If it can be done for a decent profit, they would do it in a heart beat. Every drop of oil they can produce would be sold here. Why would they not?
