ARLINGTON, VA. - Unlike earlier wars, nearly all Arlington National Cemetery gravestones for troops killed in Iraq or Afghanistan are inscribed with the slogan-like operation names the Pentagon selected to promote public support for the conflicts.
Families of fallen soldiers, sailors and Marines are being told they may have the government-furnished headstones engraved with "Operation Enduring Freedom" or "Operation Iraqi Freedom" at no extra charge, no matter where the burial is.
The vast majority of stones from other eras are inscribed with just the basic information: name, rank, military branch, date of death and, if applicable, the war and foreign country in which the veteran served.
Families are supposed to have final approval over the tombstones. However, the titles have sometimes appeared without approval.
"The headstone is not a PR purpose," Department of Veterans Affairs official Steve Muro said.
"It is to let the country know and the people that visit the cemetery know who served this country and made the country free for us."
We found three original stones for Civil War Vets with name, rank, Division etc..
Because one of the stones "had been lost" until we found it, the Vets had put a second stone on the site in the early 1900's which also showed the name, rank, Div. etc.
"other eras" and "the war and foreign county". I see no change.
They have no shame.
I fail to see the problem here. It must be some kind of MoveOn or DNC talking point because it was tucked into the news blurbs almost all day yesterday.
I will assume you are being sarcastic.....
"Old news & tired leftist dogma" is all that the Houston Comical publishes...
cbkaty sends you a salute and is LOL.....so hard my coffee was forced out my nose...YIKES!
Journalism schools keep producing graduates that guarantee the demise of the daily Pravda....errr...newspaper.....hehehehehe
Good show. Tell it like it is. Show the depth that our enemy propagandists have stooped to discredit this war and our leaders and our valiant troops.
Let the light of Truth illumine our way.
The retina burning Helen Thomas is in the Comical today....What I meant was I don't see a problem with inscribing the tombstones with OEF/OIF to let people know where that soldier was killed.
Gatya....just a bit thick today.....it happens along with grey hair...what were we talking about?
By claiming "slogan-like," I think they wanted to give the impression that the Pentagon was taking it upon themselves to put things like "Mission Accomplished!," "Let's Roll!," or "Bring it On!" onto soldier's tombstones. I'd hardly consider OIF/OEF "slogan-like."
Why, there's no main stream media bias.
Sure....
As Rush said yesterday:
Over 1,800 brave men and women have lost their lives in Iraq. The nation knows the name of only one of the parents, Cindy Sheehan. I ask you what kind of reporting is that? Over 1,800 brave men and women have lost their lives and the people of the United States know the name of one parent, Cindy Sheehan.
Ugh! Perhaps we should ask the reporter NOW what will be on his?? Maybe "Lived to insult the military" would be a good place to start. What an idiot.
