Intel refuses gauntlet AMD throws down

THE CEO OF Intel said that an advert AMD took out today challenging it to a dual core dual quite spoilt his cup of coffee.

The advert, in broadsheet the San Francisco Chronicle, challenges Intel to match it on performance for dual core chips.

But Paul Otellini, CEO pf Intel turned down the challenge with some disdain, refusing to pick up the gauntlet the chipsters threw down.

We’ve often noted the resemblance of both Intel and AMD to the Tweedledee and Tweedledum characters in Alice through the Looking Glass. These brave warriors were forced to live a sort of mock Groundhog Day existence but no blood ever got shed because both of them were basically frightened.

I was always a Intel "fanboy" until AMD came out with its Athlon64's.

I would wait until there socket M2 is ready or get the socket 939 version. I have the socket 754 v ersion and it rocks, but for future upgradeability I am stuck.

I have been using AMD for years.

Actually alot of older intel 386 and 486 chips were built by AMD. Today Intels EM64 extension is technology licensed from AMD, just like AMD uses SSE and MMX instruction sets from Intel.

I know, but the last Intel chip I have bought was a PIII 500MHZ... Since then I have bought about 20-30 AMD chips obviously not just for my personal use for for my friends and family when they want a system built. :D

OH yeah, I forgot to finish my point on that post, I forget it now. Oh wait yeah I meant to say alot of people never realized they were using an AMD processor, myself included.

But it looks like AMD is going to have some real competition next gen, since INtel is porting there pentium M tech to the desktop.

Yeah, love my AMD Athlon XP 2.1

But the chipsets most motherboard manufacturers use don't come close to releasing all the AMD potential.  They will at times even use different brands for North and South bridges, and for the most part, are just tweaked code for the same chips used for Intel.

OK - I'm being overly critical and generalizing way to much, but I've had my share of problems with rushed to market MBs trying to capture the latest greatest CPU intro.

OTOH, my Dragon Ultra Platinum MB (from SOYO) is awesome - no problems and really rocks.  Oh, yeah - it also looks great in a black Lian Li aluminum case with a plexiglass side panel.

One of the benefits of the K8 architecture is its ability to quickly ramp up processor frequency. If and when Intel brings competition, AMD will just push the clock speed much higher on the A64s to deal with it. In the mean time, AMD is getting more experienced with dual core and 32/64 bit hybrid x86s every day, while Intel's still trying to put together initial designs. Intel's throwing things together left and right to be able to use the right keywords for their marketing, but the K8 is far more than its instructions. It was beautifully designed from the ground up from a technical and performance mindset. We're just now beginning to see the K8 come to life.

but for future upgradeability I am stuck.

I've been building or upgrading computers for 20 years and can't recall upgrading a CPU. By the time I want a new CPU I want a new motherboard. The old stuff just gets pushed down the pecking order. At the moment, I'm third in line in my family.

I think they mean a "dual core duel."
Inquirer needs to "higher" an editor. (Or was AMD silly enough to spell it that way in their "chalunge"? I would find it difficult to take that seriously, myself.)

Well AMD has been pretty good at sticking with a socket for an extended period of time, look at socket A and super socket 7. Socket 754 was just meant to be a segway into a socket 940 platform, but AMD found for some reason that socket 939 was a better platform, but its funny now they are going back to a enhanced version of socket 940 in the M2.
