FEDS VOW TO GET TOUGH ON ILLEGALS Tue Aug 23 2005 17:15:30 ET

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, acknowledging public frustration over illegal immigration, said Tuesday that the federal government's detention and deportation system must be fundamentally restructured.

"We have decided to stand back and take a look at how we address the problem and solve it once and for all," Chertoff said during a breakfast meeting with reporters.

The NEW YORK TIMES is planning a front page placement for the Chertoff comments on Wednesday, newsroom sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

The unusually blunt assessment by the nation's top immigration official comes after governors in New Mexico and Arizona recently declared a border-related "state of emergency," citing a surge in smuggling and violence associated with the steady flow of illegal immigrants.

Their idea for "getting tough" probably means making laws to increase punishments for companies who don't do the government's job well enough in detecting illegals during hiring.

Yup. That seems to be where they're heading. Any excuse to increase powers domestically is fine with them.

Whenever I hear the "fence" proposal I start to think of wild animals and the free range they have down there,a triple fence some 20ft high would probably have some deep ecological affect....sounds kinda green, but, that is a legit issue

The Northern border I'm familiar with here(BWCA) it would be impossible to do this because the majority of the border runs right down the middle of chains of lakes and rivers, and the wild animal issue is in play there also, probably more so...the wolf lovers would have a fit

Any thoughts on those problems?

When stood up against national security, it's a rather back-burner issue.

You've been standing back for 20 years. How long will it take for you to "take a look" and then to "solve it"? Forgive me if I don't hold my breath.

Simple.

Include "critter holes" at regular intervals.
At ground level, large enough for rabbits, snakes etc to traverse but too small for humans.

Hey Cheorty, can you and the rest of the useless tax-payer dollar gobbling federal Homeland inSecurity bloated bureaucracy stand any further back than you are already standing?! Bloated as in top heavy pencil pusher types that is but apparently not as in actual working BP agents in the field.

In all seriousness, this sounds more like part of the warm up comedian routine for Bush and his sidekicks, Rove and Fox big push this fall for Bush's lame brain guest worker (aka shamesty for the current 12+ million criminal aliens) program. Expect to see more smoke-n-mirrors BS in the coming weeks.

This clown has about the same amount of common sense as fatso Tommy Ridge.

It's no coincidence that Ridge ended up on the Board of Directors of Home Depot (the company that sets up "employee lounge" area for illegals). As always, follow the money...

Not simple at all...Bears,wolves,coyotes,various cats,moose,mule deer,antelope,white tails,elk,rams etc. etc...free range animals.

I don't think we can have a fence.

Smart man, SAM.

The American people have initiated a full-court press over the illegal immigration mess, and Washington is having a tough time coming to terms with our anger.

It looks like they're conducting business as usual, and that's the last thing we want.

No more studies, no more summits, no more 'It's too complex...".

Just shut down the freaking border between legal crossing points, and worry about the 20 million already here after you've stopped the flood. Plug the dike, drain the swamp.

This talk of getting tough on illegal immigration reminds me of the scene in "Team America World Police" when Kim Jong Il asks Hans Blix what will happen to him and his country if they don't comply with UN sanctions and Hans said " well we will really really really be angry with you". LOL.

How many illegals come in across the east and west borders as compared to the 1,020,000 that got caught crossing north and south borders last year?

You know darned good and well that our seacoasts aren't as easy to secure as our land borders, that is a non-sequitur at this point in time.

Well nooooooo shiite!!! It's been what? 12 friggin' years since the first WTC bombing and almost four friggin' years since the second WTC bombing and these geniuses in DC thinks it's time to "look at how we address the problem?"
Hey Chertoff, I think the proverbial horse is out of the friggin' barn, MORON!

it is clear that regardless of Bush's policies, there is an anti-illegal wave that is going to sweep the country.

back in the early 2000s, none other than James Carveill predicted that by 2008 immigration would be the number one political issues, so much so Carvilel predicted an independent would run for president on that issue (admiting the DEMS cant be taken seriously on immigration).

Somebody tell Chetoff that he can start "solving the problem once and for all" by building one of these on our southern and northern borders.
