FEDS VOW TO GET TOUGH ON ILLEGALS Tue Aug 23 2005 17:15:30 ET

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, acknowledging public frustration over illegal immigration, said Tuesday that the federal government's detention and deportation system must be fundamentally restructured.

"We have decided to stand back and take a look at how we address the problem and solve it once and for all," Chertoff said during a breakfast meeting with reporters.

The NEW YORK TIMES is planning a front page placement for the Chertoff comments on Wednesday, newsroom sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

The unusually blunt assessment by the nation's top immigration official comes after governors in New Mexico and Arizona recently declared a border-related "state of emergency," citing a surge in smuggling and violence associated with the steady flow of illegal immigrants.

"The loss of Congress is possible in 2006 or in 2008, with a loss of the Presidency as well."

If they keep trying to slip amnesty through with false promises of "enforcement" look forward to seeing this on your TV In January 2009:

"I Hillary Rodham Clinton do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President "

I am sure you would be so happy if Gore or Kerry were president.

I am so tired of that argument. By that logic- since there is no other choice better than Bush, we should put up with millions of illegals crossing our border.

Screw that.

Bush is horribly off base on this and we are all paying for it. It is only because people are speaking up that anything is being done at all.

Here is a novel idea- let's put it in Ohio!
Really now, the fact that someone owns land that another illegally transits should be a cause for forfeiture? That is no better than the Marxist point of view.

There is the answer to the problem! You only need seven of them. Two for the Texas border, one for the New Mexico border, two for the Arizona border and two for the California border. the will to use them and the problem is solved in just a month or two.

I have never bashed President Bush's administration. He does have certain individuals in responsible positions who are ineffective or incompetent. Tom Ridge is one. Look at the TSA fiasco. These jack-asses have no common sense.

BTW, I was stumping for Barry AuH20 in 1964. Also, read my bio, kiddo.

...we didn't have any terrorist attacks on US soil during his tenure, but I guess that doesn't count, just so you can bash the Bush administration, right?

No terror attacks are a good thing, but that's hardly the ONLY issue with the borders. And face it, we've been LUCKY. If a terrorist really wanted to get into the country by crossing the border, do you think he couldn't? Are the millions of uneducated illegals that DO make it that much smarter that the usual college educated international terrorist?

Besides, no terror attacks is not the only border issue. The tidal wave of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS is a huge issue for people who live in border states.

Hey, all you illegals! Look out! The Feds are standing back and taking a look, and you know how serious that can be. Why, they may even appoint a blue ribbon panel to examine the issue.

Chertoff is not serious......he still uses "immigration" in conjunction with "illegal"

...the federal government's detention and deportation system must be fundamentally restructured.

Planning will take about three years, organization another five years, implementation will take... About the time Social Security goes broke we may have something in place to take care of illegal immigration. Of course then we won't be able to afford it. Maybe we'll all adapt the Mexican lifestyle, mañana.

I find it amusing that only after a political ploy from the left (AZ and NM govs w/ their "states of emergency"), does the hapless administration respond with another hapless call, that they will hold another endless series of do-nothing meetings (read "take another look at the situation".

Living down here in AZ, the illegal problem has been omnipresent for many years, it seems only now that the rest of the country is reeling from their impact, i.e. closing emergency rooms, overbloated welfare systems, overcrowded schools, etc, that something may be done. Those problems have been plaguing us for years with us hicks screaming in an empty hall.

Remember, Bush is now a Washingtonian, not a Texan. When he was gov there, he sang a different tune.

So I will believe it when I see it, until then, this noise coming from Chertoff is just Bush's administration simply trying not to be right-flanked by the left IMO.

Yeah, right. I have a warm fuzzy when I see President Bush and Congressional Republicans proposing amnesty schemes and telling us that they're nice people looking for jobs, not smuggling drugs and turning southwestern towns into gangland battlefields.

Their idea for "getting tough" probably means making laws to increase punishments for companies who don't do the government's job well enough in detecting illegals during hiring.

said Tuesday that the federal government's detention and deportation system must be fundamentally restructured.

Still on Step 2 while ignoring Step 1. All the deportation in the world isn't going to help if they can just come right back over the border again. Step 1 is to build a fence like the one Israel has. No hemming and hawing, just do it. There's no excuse not to.
